  1. Sharon - there are only eight teams.  Ottawa was Gliebermanned to death.

The CFL should expand.  They are looking at a new franchise for Ottawa, and this looks like it will go forward with strong and local (and mature) ownership.

    Next would be Quebec City.

  2. Ok They should expand to St. Johns, Ottawa,Prince George and Quebec City.

  3. From a Canadian living in the US, I don't think another US expansion would work in somewhere like Nebraska. They tried to go into large college areas before and failed. The only areas that might work in the US are along the border where Americans have picked up the CBC over the air.

As for Canadian cities, Quebec City is the most logical choice. I am a Maritimer, but Halifax would have to come after QC. Ottawa can go to Hull after far as I am concerned. Unless something is done to create interest, that city has worn out their welcome. I would try London and Victoria to create a 12 team league. If not London, I would try Moncton or Saint John.

  4. Well I don't think there is anywhere really to expand to.....but it does kinda suck with only 9 teams.

  5. Ottawa, and no place else.

St. John's, Newfoundland?  You gotta be kidding me!

  6. The CFL should expand to Ottawa again and put a team in either Quebec City or Halifax to even out the two divisions at five teams apiece.

GoodGyrl, I agree 100% with your response of the NFL expanding to Toronto. It is not going to happen. Most Americans seem to forget that Canada has their own league with different rules and which is older than the NFL. They think that the NFL is just as popular in Canada as it is in the United States. Wrong. Polls show that the CFL is the second most popular league in Canada after the NHL.

Edit: A CFL team in Windsor would be nice. I am from the Detroit suburbs and I would definitely go to games. I have heard that they could possibly play at the Pontiac Silverdome. That would be great as the Silverdome is a great stadium that is completely abandoned and needs to be put into good use.

Edit: Ryan Friesen - If you include the metropolitan area of Quebec City then the city does have more than 700,00 people.

  7. I don't think a team should go back in Ottawa if its failed twice before. I agree with Quebec City and Halifax.

  8. The CFL tried to expand to the USA in the mid 90's, which was a success for only one team the Baltimore Stallions who won the Grey Cup. When Baltimore finally got another NFL team, they Stallions moved to Montreal and became what is now known as the Alouettes. I think expansion is a great idea as long as the owners of the teams can properly invest and market their teams which is why Ottawa has failed time and time again. It's something that can be very positive if controlled properly.

  9. Were the league to expand...Ottawa first.  Yes they have failed twice there, but that is due to poor ownership situations in both cases, not the fans.

Second, for me it would be a toss up between Quebec City and then either London or Windsor.

The Maritimes would be nice, but they would add a lot of travel costs onto an already cash strapped league...so, could they, yes...

This being said, with the NFL now hovering over Toronto...I don't think the CFL will be expanding until they make sure that the Argos and TiCats are safely embedded in any NFL-Toronto contracts.

  10. Victoria,BC

    London,Ontario

    Quebec City,PQ

    Ottawa,Ontario

    Moncton,New Brunswick

    Halifax,Nova Scotia

those are pretty much the only Cities that would Have hope of supporting a team.

But i Don't think it will happen anytime soon

  11. Well, obviously Ottawa is going to open up again, but I do agree that there should be a team in Halifax. There's nothing there, and lots of CFL fans. I think they could draw crowds. If they can draw crowds in Saskatchewan, they can do it in Halifax.

I live in USA and I hate the idea of them trying to put an NFL expansion team in Toronto. Give it a rest already. There are two distinct leagues with distinct talents needs, which makes it interesting for those of us who follow both. I am NOT for NFL expanding, leave Canada's league alone!

  12. I'd say Yes...

Halifax, Windsor or London, Quebec City... Ottawa is getting annoying and frustrating to hear about...

I would like to see the CFL try the US again... but in smaller markets... there is a big NFL gap in the Northern States between Seattle, Oakland/San Francisco, Denver and Minnisota... Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska and the Dakota's... maybe a team in that region???

  13. Definitely Ottawa if you can get good owners and either Quebec City or the Halifax region.

  14. Halifax, Saskatoon, anywhere but another ontario team and they would have it made.

Ugo, since when did Quebec City have 700,000 ppl in it?  That would make it as large as Winnipeg.

  15. From an American -- Ottawa, definitely.  Windsor?  could be -- if they can retrofit the Silverdome; good idea.  I do agree with not including the Maritimes.  There's too much travel, and that area is not doing well.  Quebec City?  Sounds good.

Victoria BC?  Too close to Vancouver -- splits fan base for both.  But, who am I to make decisions?

As to Saskatchewan drawing fans -- the province owns the team, guaranteeing stability.  Also, when you're the GREY CUP camps, that just might bump up the attendance.

[I may be an American, but I'll bleed Rider green until the day I die -- being born in "the Jaw" will do that to you]

  16. I would say Halifax and/or Quebec City, mostly due to the desire of a number of fans of Canadian Football in those areas to have a team of their own.

It is possible that there are other areas that would want a team, such as Windsor, Ontario, or even in other parts of Atlantic Canada, but whether the CFL finds those areas feasible for an expansion team remains to be seen.

  17. As much as I love our wide open Pass heavy game. And NCAA overtimes (huge plus). there just isnt a market for it in our beautiful country. even the major centers who already have teams are not keeping a consistant bottom line. I dont think they will expand much more than they already have. but hopefully we can keep our 8 going.

  18. I think the CFL could be a 12 team league. They need good ownership in Ottawa since the area population is over 1 million. Based on population Quebec City would be a logical choice with a population over 700,000.

Now the next two cities would be either Victoria, Halifax, Windsor or London which ever cities were able to get a 30,000 seat stadium built.

You would have six team divisions. I would keep the playoffs the same. Play each team in your division twice and each team in the other division once for 16 game schedule.
