Should the National Enquirer sue John Edwards for slander? He said it was tabloid trash telling lies.

This was clearly a false attack and meant to damage the periodical's reputation.

As a side question I wonder whether Edwards or Obama is a bigger lying sleaze bag?

He could argue with conviction and example that he was expressing a personal opinion representing conclusions he had drawn from reading the paper.

I think that they are both ambitious politicians no better and certainly no worse than many who have disgraced the stage of American politics.

Unfortunately they cannot sue him for slander. Saying that their story was tabloid trash and telling lies is his opinion. Slander requires that the statement be factual, not merely opinion. The fact that the attack was false and meant to damage their reputation is insufficient.

Regarding whose the bigger lying sleaze bag, it's too close to call.
