Question:

Should the Quarter Horse breed go back to its roots?

Thoroughbreds like Three Bars & Depth Charge and other often nameless sires have had a positive impact on the Quarter Horse breed.

But 50 years ago the Quarter Horse was 14 ' 2 and 1200 pounds, and now it can range from that size to a 17 hand jumper. Granted, Thorughbred themselves come in all shapes and sizes from 14 ' 3 Northern Dancer to 17 hand Lemon Drop Kid.

But a larger question is temperment. The original Quarter Horse raced on Saturday and then carried kids around the yard bare back on Sunday. And these could be stallions.

Should the QH return to its foundation quarter horse roots? Or is a continuing infusion of hot blood, mostly to pacifty the racing crowd, the way to go?

I know the issue is always decided by money. I know we need money to survive, I recall when Western Horseman, for example, focused on the horse. Now it more like an equipment catolog. AQHA runs 2 publications - reflecting somethis this split personality.

  1. Yes i think it should. but like with most animals its bred with something else to enhance it ... that sucks. They are such a beautiful breed as they are =0)

  2. Hi the stories of the foundation of the Quarter horse is yet to be revealed in accuracy. Most say it was the Steel dust of the Trinity River that was the soul founder of the breed. But in the West texas panhandle Old West Author Colonel Bain disrupts the claim by saying the Sanchez family were the first AQHA registered. They can not deney his claims nor his sources.

They await his Old West book series, especially the book called "Douglas" which speaks of AQHA roots. The AQHA office does have a historian copy, according to my sources.

Yes I do believe more emphasis should be put on the old nags & stallions that made quarter horse racin and breeding at its finest today!!

Like Colonel Bains says at Newwest.net
