Should the Red Sox look for more starting pitching considering ...?

Tim Wakefield is clearly in the twilight of his career and having an awful season (6-8, 3.94 ERA) and Buchholz has been horrific this year (2-5, 5.81 ERA)? If yes, then who and at what cost? If no, why not?

  1. ya the red sox are to need to make a trade hear soon they really only got becket and papoblon but hes a closer

  2. I think they will keep their eye on James Shields long term. Short term, they trade for Greg Maddux for a portion of his $10M salary.  Epstein and Padres Kevin Towers are friendly, and I'm sure there are prospects Towers would like to have...like this kid playing 1B for the SeaDogs.

  3. Umm, true Wakefield is heading into the twilight of his career, but you have to remember that even he doesn't know where that knuckle ball will go. What really need is middle relief. Delcarmen, Hansen (who I really like), and Matterson are all young and inconsistent. That is why you put them in now so hopefully they get enough big game experience for the playoffs. Remember Okajima went thru a slump in the second half last year and got it together in September and October. I wouldn't oppose a trade for H. Street (Oakland) but that depends who we would have to give up for him. They'll be alright though....

  4. no they've got a enough, the bullpen seems like a bigger problem

  5. yes i think they should try to pick up someone that is effective like josh beckett someone in that skill range

  6. I like Wake, but wonder what he may look like as a long reliever since the Sox really don't have someone who can fill that role.  He has a rubber arm and could give spot starts if need be.  I'd like to see Buchholz live up to the potential he promised us, but c'mon; who can live up to that hype (2nd game started is a no-no)?  I wouldn't give up on these guys yet.

  7. I don't believe the Sox necessarily need starting pitching. Wakefield is actually having a pretty good season, an era of 3.94 in the American league is what you would like to see from a bottom of the rotation guy. As far as his 6-8 record his problem there has been lack of run support. I think Masterson should be in the rotation instead of Bucholz right now, because Bucholz just hasn't been able to pitch consistently.

The Sox are in need of bullpen help right now and I think a move for a guy like Ron Mahay may be the solution, he is a left handed specialist who wouldn't come at as high of a price as a guy like Fuentes.

As far as the future goes the Sox have one of the best stash of minor league pitching talent around. Maybe Theo should look at another top of the rotation type of guy in the off season to help transition in some of the young talent over the next couple of years.

  8. They need middle relief badly, the starters have been decent but the bullpen has given up leads as of late. Hansen and Delcarman have been awful. What they really need is a shortstop.

  9. If I was the Sox, I'd go be careful before I bet the farm (literally) on a new pitcher unless it was a CC caliber pitcher... remember Gagne!  Stand pat!

  10. dude shut up.. wakefield is the man.  he was cruising since july one untl the yankee game, and those guys have all seen him for years... they know him cause he used to own them.

wake eats innings in the second half that's his job.  His Knuckleball eats innings...

what's with these bandwagon RsN people who hate Wakefield... you wouldn't understand cause yr bandwagon.

    Buckholz is a rookie....

Colon is trying to come back.

NO THE RED SOX DO NOT NEED STARTERS!!!!!!!!!

they need someone from teh bullpen to step up and they need Coco, Tek, Ellsbury and Lowell to start to hit again... we know they can, but they are just 4 big holes in the line up because they are all slumping at teh saem time, can't string hits together to score runs that way.

still got 1/2 a month until it needs to start to click in Beantown... peak for the playoffs.

No trades needed in Boston.  Farm is good, these guys just gotta play through it like they did last year.
