Reminder of the Soviet oppression and an eyesore, isn't it?

  1. All my life I enjoyed the view of the city with the palace as the landmark, but now with the current political tensions and threats from Moscow and the anti Polish attitude I think it should be leveled to the ground and a building in Honor of the Warsaw uprising should be built or another theme of polish freedom with Napoleon on a horse in front of the main door squashing the soviets.

  2. I'm not Polish, so I don't have much say in this, but I don't think that it should be demolished. I've always liked this building style (the only positive thing Stalin ever contributed to the world...) because it looks a lot more dignified than later Soviet "creations". When you compare this with khrushyovkas (see picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co... ) you begin to appreciate it a lot more...

As far as the skyline goes, I'm sure there are other skyscrapers in Warsaw that are a lot more imposing than this one.

In the end, it would be a waste of resources (and probably a safety hazard) to tear down a building just because of its symbolic value. It's not like Stalin's name is plastered all over the place, and it's a building for culture and science. What could be so bad about those two?

  3. Hardly an eye-sore in my opinion, in fact from a 'tourist' point of view that building is the first thing that's ever made me want to go to Poland!

It looks a little run down though but all it needs is a good clean and those nasty Newsweek adverts need to be removed.

If that picture was taken on a sunny day and it would look totally different.

Don't let the history of it get in the way of a building of true beauty.

Update: I just found this picture of it on Wikipedia and I think it looks like one of the most magnificent buildings in Europe I've ever seen. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co...
