Should the U.S. foot this bill?

Our country is in pretty bad shape, economically. According to the Wall Street Journal, the rate of those who've been unemployed for more than 6 months rose 37% in the last year.

The United Arab Emirates has now forgiven Iraq of all its debt.

While Iraqi citizens enjoy the luxury of cheap gas, they charge the American military U.S. prices.

In light of their wealth and our economic troubles, should we be responsible for paying to repair their parks and pools so they can play?

  1. No!

  2. It's our mess. And, I believe you have the UN confused with the Catholic Church.

  3. This is actually not the first time we have done this. We basically re-built Japan after WW2.

  4. well we are the ones who destroyed there parks and pools. like in a store you brake it you buy it

  5. Yeah, the Iraqi's have it sooo good, don't they?  That's absurd... almost as absurd as the idea that the US is in "pretty bad shape".  When the unemployment level gets as low as it was, there is only one way for it to go... and bear markets come every few years to sweep away the excesses.

  6. Hmm, I don't know. Who destroyed everything in their country? I guess it was... oh, that's right, the US military

  7. We are paying for their rebuilding with these high gas prices. They are getting lots money for their oil. You might want to move to Iraq to enjoy their luxuries.

  8. Against the United Nations,America have attacked on Iraq, where is the Democracy?

All the world  suffering bad due to this wrong deed,See the Oil prices, who are responsible for it?

If Saddam was culprit  than ,there were so many options except war,war have destroyed whole country and lacs of people expired without any crime, their crime was they were citizen of week country of Iraq! you don't think so?

If some relief they are getting now, they will thankful to America in future,if you will be fair to them.

  9. It's a bit like the existence of God. That is beyond out powers of understanding. I think the true answer is having made a terrible error of judgment in invading Iraq for nonexistent weapons of mass destruction it is rightthat the cost of repairs should fall on the invading power. It's a bit like you having a car crash which is  deemed to be your fault

  10. In light of their wealth? You mean the Iraqis'? LOL, they don't have much wealth, a reason why they are appealing to countries to cancel debt incurred under Saddam.

Yes, it does seem like the US does have a duty to provide financial support to Iraq. That is a moral duty brought on by invading them and toppling their government. Before you cry too hard over this, please remember that Americans swim in wealth compared to Iraqis.

Well Razor Jim, the logic follows from the stated reason for bombing their country: to improve it, you know get rid of Saddam, make it a demoracy, etc. If that was the logic behind the war, the clear logical conclusion would be to actually work to improve Iraq, not bomb it, make it worse than it was, then leave.

Alternatively, if the reason for war were any of the false claims about WMD's, terrorism, etc., then the war was conducted on false pretenses, and the country was damaged due to mistakes of the US. In which case, reparations would be owed. No matter what you want to say the reason for the war was, your logic is going to lead to you pumping money in to Iraq.

  11. We are one of the few nations in history to bomb a country into submission and then pay to clean up and rebuild it.

I fail to see the logic in that...regardless of which side of the argument you are on.
