Question:

Should the US threaten military action if Russia does not stop threatening Georgia?

By attempting to regain control of Georgia the Russians are threatening to monopolise oil supplies from the region and therefore the economic security of the West, shouldn't the US inform the Russians that they will not be allowed to continue with their present policy and that if they do the US and it's allies will move in to maintain Georgia's independence.

Make no mistake this is as big a crisis as Cuba.

  1. Russia Aren't trying to regain control of georgia as you put it....But I do believe this could become a volatile situation. If Genocide has been committed on the georgian's part, that would explain russia's response, and if georgia are continueing to bomb south ossetia then i think russia will go all the way and declare war and bring about regime change. One thing i am sure of is that Russia will not back down to Western threats(in their own backyard) and if we get involved it could very well lead to very strained relations.

  2. YES!

Help Georgia ! whatever the reason was to start all that horror! Russia can destroy a whole big cultural and important civilization like Georgia! True genocide! Nothing good will come from this war !

Why not to respect the Olympic principals instead!?

  3. U.S. would seek U.N. resolution. This can avoid the mistake in Iraq. Also the economic situation is not good for any military interference.

Perhaps, by allowing the invasion of Russia to Georgia, U.S. can have the ticket to handle Iran.

  4. For now all that russian says it's stop the violence. What is the reason for USA use threaten military action?

  5. The  self  proclaimed  'policeman  of the  world'.  They're  already  getting   their  asses  kicked. Capitalism  is  falling  to  bits  as  prices  increase  while  wages do  not.  Time  for  regime  change  in  many  countries  around  the  world.

  6. Russia are just copying America which is morally bankrupt at the moment. US used the Kurds as an excuse to invade Iraq and Russia are using a simlar excuse to invade Georgia.

  7. No not unless you want WW3 and to kiss the World Goodbye with all the nukes.

  8. First of all, please get your facts straight.  Russia is not trying to gain control of Georgia.  They want control over the disputed territory next to Georgia called South Ossetia.

This certainly is not as big a crisis as Cuba and a cease-fire has been called for.  Go to http://news.yahoo.com/fc/World/Georgia and read up on it.

  9. Bush has out foxed the Russians again.   Russia has agreed to cease fire and allow humanitarian aid to Georgia.  Bush is sending uniformed US military troops and ships into Georgia with humanitarian aid for Georgia.  The trick is that Russia now has to contend with US military humanitarian efforts.  If they start something up and shot at or kill US troops then Russia will be seen as provoking the US.

This "humanitarian" aid by our US military gives us reason to be in Georgia in unlimited numbers and being in a war zone will need their weapons too.  Brilliant underhanded move that can shut down Russia's war.

  10. The Georgians, fools that they are, fell into the Ossettian insurgents trap as did the Russians though they were quite happy to.The Georgians rather heavy handedly I might say tried to bring the insurgents to heel only to shoot themselves in the foot as the Russians were swift and severe in their retribution.Who did this tiny nation think it was, taking on the mighty Russia right on its border?Sheer suicide, militarily and economically.

Georgia took a gamble that the West would back it up when in reality the U.S. wanted to see how hard Russia were prepared to push back.I think it has its answer.

  11. Firstly 30 miles into a country is not its boarder. Secondly has anyone seen any protest at Russian government actions by its people and finally didn't something similar like this happen with Austria.

  12. The United States and its kind will do nothing outside of spewing insincere moral vote winning waffle on television.  They don't care if Russia want to move their garden fence out by 3 or 4 meters, they couldn't care less.  They just have to seem like they care, it works wonders for the United Nations.

I think Russia has observed an opportunity to grab back some land and it's going to grasp that opportunity with both hands!  I think Russia plan to change the sign above the door to something other than "Georgia".  Let's face it, they've wanted to do that for a long time according to the history books, it should come as no surprise.

As a footnote - I don't know how Bush has the cheek to say "The violence must stop.".  Surely his advisors should have said "You better not say that sir, you'll seem like a complete idiot, the public already know to much about you.".

  13. No the should keep out of it.

  14. How many spare divisions do you have????

  15. they know very well we have our hands full in afghanistan and Iraq.

  16. I think any intervention will have to come from China, they are the only other nation that the Russians have any respect for, and with the Olympics they may just do that, for the sake of their international reputation.

  17. No, They are fully occupied as it is.

  18. I really don't see the danger. So we lost a puppet regime to the Russians. In case people haven't noticed we have been losing these puppet regimes since the end of the Cold War. Not like Georgia did anything anyway. They attacked Russia and they came back and slapped the p**s out of them. I suppose that is what you get when you attack a military superpower.

Of course at least Russia knows how to fight a war. None of this helping the people bs. Save your own people and bomb the p**s out of the others. Only way to win a war WWII showed us that.

  19. Did you know..

Ossettia has been a disputed region since the early 1990s.

In 1992 with the full agreement of Georgia/Ossetia/Russia a peace keeping force has been in place and kept control of the region.

Following the "independence" of Kosovo - supoorted by the EU because they wanted to come to our side, Ossetia decided to try the same.

Georgia has been pushing to join NATO and decide to attack the break away area and the Russian Peace keeping force. Expecting their allies form the west to support them.

The west does not want to get invilved outside of rhetoric.

Dont believe the all the press.  You and they only know or will tell you half the story.

  20. America can't do anything.

  21. But the US are already at war with Iraq and Afghanistan - and we all know if they get involved Britain will be dragged in too.  I hope they keep out of it.

  23. The problem is that the relations between the US and Russian Federation are very unstable as it is. In the media they are portrayed as best buddies however Russia and the United States will always be competitors no matter what government rules, be it communist or capitalist. The United States is already pressuring Russia however Russia knows the United States will not get involved because they don't want to risk war with Russia. Somehow I think the Georgian

case is hopeless. The Georgian president was always known in the Kremlin as a hothead maybe this is the payback for being one yet idont believe the R.Federation has the right to take military action to something that doesnt even belong to them. You're undoubtebly right this is very complicated. Should the west intervene it could risk war with a very powerful nation. Should they not they will lose Georgia, important oil supplies will once again belong to the Russians and it could risk an all out war in the Caucasus. Russia is using the "my land" excuse to reclaim the terroritories lost when the Soviet Union fell apart. This situation has no bright future.

for the record i wish i could reply to people, protest has occured in russia by its own people. i dont think one could compare a supposed genocide by georgian hands to the genocide thats been caused by russian hands for past decades: chechens, jews, etc. however i would call the georgian president a fool for declaring war on a nation he cannot beat because he had the perception he would be supported by the west. so in this war/conflict both are to blame.

  24. The US cannot possibly threaten Russia.  Russia is no Iraq or some banana republic.  The US has no credibility with Russia in this particular conflict after its handling of Serbia.

  25. Russia wants its monopoly and Georgia is a very big piece of its puzzle. I for one, feel very uncomfortable at how quickly Russia is willing to take action.  Give them an inch...
