Question:

Should the USA adopt a parliamentary system, similar to Canada/Britain/Australia?

This System is composed of two chambers, the representative chamber, which essentially represents the people and the review chamber, which represents local entities in the UK, provinces in Canada and the States in Australia. Not dissimilar to the United States Congress.

However the fundamental difference is the power that these bodies hold. They direct power away from the head of state, one person, back to an elected body which is held accountable every day because of a presence of a Government and an alternative Government. These groups engage in debate that shows the true colours of the politicians that govern our countries. The United States really lacks an elected sense of government (group), which steers power away from an autocratic system, one person (the president). Also the measures that hold leading powers accountable are not as strong as they are in the countries listed above.

Who wants to see the Westminster (no that does not mean becoming British again) system in America??

  1. No.  I like our checks and balances.  Our system is not as "autocratic" as you say.   Things dont always get done, but that is usually a GOOD thing, considering the things they are trying to do.

Your argument is actually one in favor of stronger state and local govts, (where it is much easier to hold them accountable) as opposed to stronger Fed govt.  I agree with that concept.

  2. it couldnt hurt - I read in one of the comments that 'things dont get done, is a good thing'? - I think not! The westminster system is not perfect, trust me I know, I am Australian, we have many things that could be better but we will work it out and get it done and as quickly and as quietly as possible, without glitz, glamour or fanfare

  3. no point in asking this question to americans. they won't understand. they're too busy doing their sisters

  4. No.  Our system of government is fine the way it is.  The Constitution would have to be rewritten to change the form of government.  That would never happen.

  5. why not?...USA inhabitants are not nuts,...to get outsmarted by the leaders they (intelligently?!) chosen.

  6. Wow, you need to study the Constitution of the United States than you will see that Congress actually holds the power in the United States with checks and balances so my answer would be no the United States is doing just fine.
