How about a special type of tennis ball? I mean some of those players strike it to 100 mph plus so whats the problem?

  1. A cricket ball is spherical and already quite aerodynamic! The only thing more aerodynamic could be bullets! Would that cause less injuries?

  2. cricket should be placyed on play stations and not on field

  3. don't go all brussells on us. leave the game alone! the players know the ball hurts! apart from the trackies they wear, its still a very traditional game AND WE LIKE IT LIKE THAT!

  4. No way! It's part of the game.

How many times as a child have you been hit with the ball whilst playing? Rolling on the ground in agony, and all your friends, girls as well as boys (small village, not enough lads for a game) telling you to get up or you will be bowled out.

No such thing then as protective headgear, the batsmen shared a pair of pads (if the owner wasn't out shopping with his mam) and the poor 'wickety' didn't even get a glove.

Back to the question. With an aerodynamic ball, you would loose the effect of 'spin' to a large extent, and therefore the batsman would know what the track of the ball would be and stay at the crease all day. Not what gives to entertaining cricket I would think

  5. The game would end up like football with soft prima donnas playing it

  6. Isn't that an important reason it is such a "manly" game?

Change it even more and you'll end up with -"softball"?

  7. No

  8. Hi,

    Its an interesting thought .

    Cheers

  9. Are you getting soft ? lol

  10. Instead of ball being in round shape do you have to have the ball in a square shaped...!!!!

  11. like a arrow or something???

more aerodynamic means less force against it. so the object whatever your suggesting will travel faster than the cricket ball

  12. Don't tell me - you're an English health and safety executive!

  13. The fear of Injury is an essentiality in the Game.

Batsmen need to know that a bowler can injure him by bowling a bouncer. That thought should be at the back of the mind always.

If not, ppl like Ganguly/ Sehwag might become Champion batsmen.

  14. Why don't we just get rid of the ball completely? I mean, there are people out there who might complain after getting hit by a sponge ball, you know. Yeah, why don't we PRETEND to throw an imaginary ball and pretend to hit it with our imaginary cricket bats.

Or instead, why not play on rubber, in case it hurts if you fall on the ground accidentally.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but my point is that you can't avoid all forms of danger. Its there in every single sport and this is the main one for cricket.

  15. we may call cricket a gentlemans game but at least the cricketers have the guts to play with something that has a stae of fear instead of going off with a air inflated ball if you get my drift

  16. Interesting question.

  17. No, because how would you do it without changing the game. It would be hard to find a ball that behaved in the same way and still was unlikely to cause injury.

Also Sometimes part of the game  for bowlers is to intimidate the batsman by hurting them by hitting them with the ball.

The last reason is that is fairly minor is batting with large pads and chunky golves is part of the way batsmen have always batted and this may change the game.

  18. The way we have become such a 'nanny' state in Britain at the moment, it is probably already on the cards!!
