Question:

Should the drivers of late running trains be publicly flogged at their destination?

...or would it be better to select random members of railway staff and put them in the stocks at stations along the route?

At least the next time they say "train company X apologises for the late running of this service and any inconvenience this may cause"... we will know that they really mean it.

  1. At first I thought this was a joke... and then I recalled your question as to why Staff didn't bow or genuflect to the passengers !!

I'd actually go with the STOCKS !!  It permits us riding masses to lob a random rotten vegetable at the offenders !!

Here in the Colonies, I'd like to start using the stocks for our politicians and corporate board members !!

  2. depends on the reason and duration of lateness

  3. LOL    yeah man if we were back in the roman days that could work. But use it on the executives tho. (man I would crucify union pacific if I could)(I hate UP guts)

but most of the time the lateness of the train is not often determined or effected by the crew & driver.      the thing that delays them in the US on Amtrak is the host rail road putting them in the hole or siding to wait for a freight train to pass. The other reason is bad track that slows you down because if you would go fast on this track you would derail. last one is other accident that mite happen like a car geting crushed on the grade crossing. some body having a hart attack and all other thing that could happen to slow you down.

but I herd this from some one (I forgot who  and where) and I agree that the USA gov should fine the freight railroads $$$$$$$ when trains are late. (specially UP) right now they are bribed to give on time performance. and that isn't working

  4. There used to be a standing joke on the DB [W. German Rail] that they would shoot the engineer if they were 5 minutes late.  I never saw a passenger train 5 minutes late!  4, yes.  6, yes.  But you knew WHY the train was late before it got there.

No, I do not advocate public flogging of train crews.  Flog them fools in their ivory towers whose arses are shaped like the seat of their chairs. They're the greedy SOB's that are causing the delays -- deferred maintenance on stock, motive power and infrastructure --  all in the name of stockholder dividends.

If the stock holders knew what the management was cutting in order to have large profits -- YOU'RE d**n RIGHT THERE'D BE SOME FLOGGING!  Maybe even some hot oil. . .

  5. at your job if it is done with will you like it.

  6. This should be the punishment for all concerned.

  7. sometimes its no the train drivers fault for running

    late

in the US lots of times people try to beat the train to the crossing

and lose the race -results in accident (usually a fatal) so

the train has to stop , wait for the authorities to come do paperwork remove the body (or bodies) and check to make

sure there no damage to the engine and then some time

the crew dies (where they can no longer drive/[operate the

    train for that day)

  8. First  you got to know the reason why the train is late. There are many things that can go wrong.signals.,comms,track defects, loco failures etc.All traindriver s are commited to their job.no flogging neaded at all..Mabee you live in the perfect world with nothing to worry about. Iwould like to know from you if u ever wondered about the stearing wheel that you see on the left hand side of the loco .purpuse

  9. Only if they do the same to passengers who make trains late by deliberately holding doors open.

I would even extend such punishment to those who do not pay the fare.

  10. The chief executives of the rail companies could be transformed into a live locomotive.  Simply attach them by their silk ties to the buffers of the leading carriage and have them tow the train to its destination.  See how they'd cope with leaves on the line then!

  11. No.  The fireman should for letting steam pressure get so low as to make it late in the first place.

  12. Good Heavens NO man!!!

The delay is probably due to some imbecile getting himself all run over by the trains.

Flogging the driver would be like flogging the weatherman when it rains.

You MUST punish the railroad staff and local constabulary for allowing trespassers on the sacred railroad grounds.

Go the source man, to the source!!

  13. Yes, this is an excellent idea, but I am, as you know, in favour of public flogging for anybody without a Knighthood. My only problem with this scheme is as to who would flog the floggers.
