Question:

Should the fairies in my story be of the long-lived type?

A little back story. They live in a separate dimension, with only a few 'gateways' between our world and theirs. The main character in my story is a human pregnant with a fairy's child. I'm not sure if I want the fairy's to be the kind that don't die of natural causes, or if they're basically humans with wings and magic powers. I am leaning towards the 'immortality' bit, but it's still hanging in the air.

  1. well my question is = is the human in love with the fairy she was with? if yes then i wouldn't make the fairies immortal because it would be sad if she was to die and he would live on for forever.

or if you make them immortal then you can make the woman die but continue with the story of the child growing up with fairies while being a halfling.

  2. I would say not immortality, but not human-length, either. I think it would be pretty unique if you had the faeries have a lifespan of, say, 500 years or so?

answer mine, please! I need help! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

  3. immortality

  4. The immortal thing only really works when done well - i.e. they think differently when they're immortal. For example, this woman would be more like a very bright pet than a companion because in the grand scheme of things to a immortal, she's going to live a tiny, tiny lifetime. And they'll have met a great many women. And they will not, probably have a great drive towards fidelity (fidelity's hard enough for a lifetime, probably impossible for ever, and why would they need it). Or children. why would you need many children if you are going to live forever anyway? (As a species). See, if they live forever but think/act in ways we would consider normal/moral it just seems unlikely to me. So if you're not going to really consider the effect of immortality on the charactor, I wouldn't recommend it. By itself, it's overdone.

But then - I like fairies to be traditional, mischeivous, not that noble, tetchy, baby-snatching thieves and rustlers. Who think totally different to us. Like the originals.

  5.      Like angels, fairies are immortal.  But it's an interesting point regarding half fairy/half human.  In this case, I think you'll have to make this particular being susceptible to death, but obviously with superior powers to those of straight forward humans.  Either that, or have it so that if this being is, say, shot, the human part dies, but the fairy part escapes the human body and rises like a gossamer cloud, a little like a soul.  Maybe, too, these half-humans aren't liable to human deceases, only physical actions, like being shot, as I said, or clubbed.

Hope this is of some help

    Good luck

  6. I hate the immortality thing.

    A) It's overused

    B) Why would anyone want to live forever? It would be a living h**l to go through each day knowing exactly what the next thousand days would bring.

    C) When I hear that a character is immortal, I put the book down. I already know the end because they can't die. So much for suspense.

Maybe the fairy blood in them would cause them to be stronger, but please don't make them immortal.

  7. they should die of old age but just ectended like at 400 years old. or somin like that.

  8. I think the whole immortality thing is getting old :o Maybe make them live an extra 100-500 years or something...
