  1. Bus passes for senior citizens is one of the few civilised things that survived the horror of Thatcher and New Labour!

    The buses are expensive and unreliable because of deregulation and privatisation.  Retired and unemployed people with passes are the only ones who can (a) afford to use them because the cash fares are so ridiculously high and (b) have the time to stand around waiting for a long time to see if one actually turns up.

    Also, Senior Citizens' passes can only be used in off-peak periods.

    If Gordon Brown was worth anything he would re-regulate public transport, integrate bus timetables with connecting trains and ferries and get rid of all these cowboy companies using smoky, dirty old buses with no proper handrails or adequate ventilation!

    But he isn't, so he won't.
