Should the letters of recommendation be sent before or after the application?

I am applying to colleges to right now, and I am wondering whether or not I should have my teachers write and send in their letters of recommendation now, or wait until I have sent in my application along with everything else required. Does it matter if they get the letters before the application?

  1. Each application is different.  You should follow what the college wants, but if sent in separately get started early as recommenders often forget to write their letters.  Your file opens with the first item to arrive, no matter what it is, and is closed when all required items are received.

  2. usually, you should include the letters of recommendation along with your application. if your teacher can't write it until after you've sent the application, include a note saying "letters of recommendation to follow"

  3. Wait until the school has received your application as there is nothing they can do with the letters of recommendation if they receive them before the application.  You can send the letters back with the application or you can have your teachers send them to the school themselves (make sure to provide them with a stamped and addressed envelope if you go this route).

  4. My college told me that it doesn't matter--that once they receive one thing from you, they open up a file for you, and everything they get from you goes into that file (up til the admissions deadline.) I think it's the same for every school, but if you're unsure, e-mail or call the admissions office.
