The Bush administration has frozen arms sales to Taiwan to avoid angering China, a key ally in the North Korea disarmenant. Besides Taiwan does not need the weapons since Russia has stopped shipping weapons to China.

  1. China owns us.  We can't afford to p**s them off.   That's why every year we complain about human rights abuses, but don't do anything about it.

Essentially, we have massive government debt, and we have to continually "service" that debt.   We are continually buying back government bonds that have reached maturity and in order to buy back all of that old debt we have to issue new debt.  We list that new debt for sale and market conditions determine the interest rate we can set.  China and Saudi Arabia buy up a lot of that debt.  If they decided not to we'd be in BIG trouble.

And that's why ultimately we will continue to kiss their butts.  They are our national credit card company per se, and we need them to keep giving us more and more credit because we have a huge outstanding balance and we keep adding to it every year.  That's also another reason why we have to maintain a military presence in the middle-east - because without our support the Saudi Royal family would be toppled in short order and that would have serious financial implications for us.
