  1. You can turn off any appliance but you are not supposed to light them yourself. Unless you are competent with these devices they are required to be started by qualified persons in many jurisdictions. Pilot lights can consume vast quantities of fuel over long periods. Electronic ignition appliances are big savers in this area.

  2. I read somewhere online that a standing pilot light burns $8.00 worth of gas per year at 2006 prices.  Having said that, if you turn them off to save money, when you go to relight them, they may not light.  Often when you turn them off, for some reason spiders will put webbing on and in the o*****e and the gas pressure is so low it won't blow through throught he web and the pilot won't relight until it has been cleaned out.  Been there, done that.

  3. I have the same problem, I have 2 fire place with pilot light always on. I asked my handyman and real-estate agent, both said it's there to stay.  Talking about wasting energy :(  I would love to find out how to shut them off.....

  4. If you have the knowledge to relight them, turn them off. If they must remain on see what it ould cost to replace them with new ones. I bought a new "on demand" water heater and my gas bill dropped thirty dollars a month.

  5. With no plans of using it for many months,it's probably the best idea.

It's an insignificant amount of your total heat load but does consume a small amout of gas for nothing.

  6. I'm not a gas man or anything but NO! It's best to leave the pilot light alone at all times. It doesn't burn that much gas anyway and if your boiler is anything like mine it's also used for hot water so is still in use even when heating isn't used.

  7. Yes, you are just wasting gas.
