NYC police have 48 hours to get their story straight.... If anything a police officer should be able to have a coherent account of events right after it occurs... The "48 hour rule" does it lead to dishonesty & abuse?

  1. More than 48 hours is plenty of time to create an alternative explanation of events that satisfy your desires, and to ponder it to find any holes in your logic.  Right after an event, memories can be fuzzy and distorted depending on what occurred.  Perhaps 24 hours would be more fitting, so as to allow the person time to recover and recall events without giving them too much time to concoct a lie.

  2. .  NO.  They don't wait 48 hours before telling their side of the story. It has to be done before 48 hours so it is fresh in everyone's minds.
