Question:

Should the retainer hurt this much?

Hi there,

I got my braces off almost two weeks ago and was given my Essix retainer on Thursday. Fantastic, my teeth look great. But the retainer for my lower jaw seems to be pressing against my gums and has actually caused some bleeding. The area is painful to brush, once the retainer is on I feel no pain and when it is off I feel no pain. So I guess the question is this, is this pain I feel caused by the retainer scraping at my gums when I pull it off? Should I call the orthodontist and get a new one?

Does anyone have experience with this and what did you do?

Thanks!

  1. Yes, all of that is completely normal! No worries, hun. It will do that for a while. If you are really concerned just ask a specialist, but all that is normal.

  2. Amirite in thinking that the retainers you got were just plastic all over?

Well anyway i'll go with that. Um, that's pretty normal for it to hurt, dol. If it bleeds too much, then i'd go back to the orthodontist just in case.

Just don't do what I did and leave it out due to it hurting, a tooth of mine has gone back again because it takes about 3 months for the jaw to harden up (which is why you got retainers)...

There is nothing he can do with it now. :/

    :] good luck with them
