  1. Currently there is no other major source for fuel other then fossil fuels. In the U.S. and China our electricity is mainly produced from coal and transportation world wide requires oil and gas. Also most places on the planet uses natural gas for heating.

Overall we need petrolatum and other fossil fuels to keep our world functioning. While things like green and renewable energy maybe the future we lack the technology to produce it economically and in large enough quantities now. Also biofuels cannot be used in northern latitudes in the winter and aviation because they have less bang for each gallon of fuel and they solidify under cold temperature.

  2. Oil is by far the best primary energy source for small use. The thing is oil should be made from material rather than pumping it out of the ground.

  3. It is the easiest "energy" to transport.  Yes, there are other forms of energy, but can you "take them with you"?  This is oil's (and derivatives) biggest advantage.  The only form of energy that might compete is a chemical battery in a small space.  Typical "prime movers" have capacities ranging from 1-200 kW.  Supplying energy and making the engine small is not very easy.  Other forms of energy (wind, solar, nuclear) just aren't that portable, or don't scale to a form that works well in those applications where oil (and derivatives) are used.

  4. 1) Because it's one of, if not the, most efficient fuel source known to man.

    2) It's easy to use.

    3) It's what our infrastructure is based on.

There are reasons not to use it.. but those are some arguments for it.
