  1. Absolutely not, bonus points are something a team can still achieve even if they're losing and allows them to get points on the board, making the competition stronger between bottom and tops teams on the table. So no, bonus points should stay.

  2. No!

The bonus system seems a good improvement and probably should be imitated by other sports (i.e. soccer world cup). It is more fair and also the loosing teams have more chances until the last game in the group play.

  3. I agree - get rid of bonus points.

Standings tables should reflect how many points were scored on the field of play.

Call me old fashioned, but why should you get anything for losing a game?

How can you suggest that it's not fair to lose because a team got one more kick over than the other! If that's the case, let's just call every game a draw before we start and no-one will get hurt feelings, or give 2 points for 'almost' scoring a try - harden up!

A bonus point for 4 tries only encourages positive play when you've got 3 tries, up until the 4th try is scored.

If there was no bonus point for scoring 4 tries, this would encourage positive play moreso as teams would want to score as many points as possible during pool play, knowing that points difference would come into play more when teams were tied on equal points in the table.

  4. The object of a game of rugby is to score tries, is it not?

Think of the original task of scoring tries, namely to have a kick at goal.

Nothing pleases the teams and the spectators so much.

Moreover, with some Northern hemisphere teams having such a love affair with the turf, to the point where penalties are awarded, is it fair that a team could win on penalties against a team that scored 4 tries?

Blah!    Enterprise and skill are what want we want to see on the pitch.   Good luck to the 4 try scorers and may they perdure in this land of mediocrity.

  5. I disagree, the bonus point system is good.

It encourages positive play and rewards teams for playing expansively and being competitive.

Scoring four tries is not easy. The incentive of a bonus point encourages teams to play attacking rugby and is a fair reward when the feat is achieved.

If you finish within 7 points you finished within one score of the opposition (whether that be a try or penalty). Plenty of people complain that teams win by a penalty, drop goal or conversion so sometimes it is unfair to lose because the other team got one more kick over than you. The compensation of one point could be seen as insufficient from another point of view. A bonus point is definately warranted.

Finally if there was an incredibly close game with both teams scoring 4 tries and the score ended up at 28-26, do you think it would be fair for one team to grab all the points and the other to leave with nothing just because one of the teams converted one more try??
