The Caterpillar
For countless days and endless nights
I’ve crawled through the leaves,
eaten holes in them all-
tasted the bitterness of herbs
and the sweetness of flowers.
Whatever life fed me
I’ve chewed it all thoroughly,
and let it ferment in my belly.
I’ve labored hard,
and spun my new home-
Now leave me alone!
It’s hard work being this still
and this solitary;
and God only knows,
If and when
I should decide to come out,
whether I’ll be an ugly moth
or a magnificent butterfly.
I don’t really care either way,
as long as my wings
can tread over air
and lift me high above
this earthly prison.
