  1. Yes for rear wheel drive and no for front wheel drive..

  2. Rotation of tyres as recommended by manufacturer will enhance the tyre life.

Always take to a wheel alignment shop where they check and correct the alignment. This avoids early wear, tread side wear etc.

  3. Today with most front wheel drive cars the tire manufacturers reccommend that the best tires be on the rear of the car.  When you go around a corner the extra weight in the front of the car helps the car hold the road better than the rear which is lighter. So with that in mind the best traction should go to the rear. (Safety)  However, your drive wheels wear the tires faster than the tires that are just trailing so if you want to keep the tire wear even you need to put the best tires up frontso they will catch up with the ones in the rear. Rear wheel drive cars you shouldn't have to do that with. If your vehicle is 4 wheel drive all bets are off. Som it becomes a question of safety versus tread wear. Only you casn answer that one.

  4. This wouldn't be an issue if you rotated your tires every 5,000 miles. If you have a fullsize spare tire, you're suppose to put that tire into the rotation as well. But judging by the fact your front tires wear out noticably faster, I'd say you're driving a Front Wheeled Drive vehicle with a donut as your spare tire so therefore you'll only have to rotate 4 tires.

Rotation of your tires is fairly simple and easy, if you don't want to do it yourself take it to any place that has a lift and ask them to do it for you.

  5. i've asked this same question of a close friend who is a mechanic. after we argued back and forth for a short time we came to the conclusion that the tyres with better tread should be on the front of the vehicle as they are responsible for steering the car.. without decent tread the front of the car would simply aquaplane in the rain.. obviously it's best to have good tread all round but if you're in a similar position to me and can't always afford new tyres so you have to make do, being able to drive but not steer just isn't safe.

  6. Usually the front tires have LESS treads.  If it has more now, leave it there until they wear down more.

    Good Luck...
