I read an article yesterday on yahoo about a doomsday involving an experiment with an atom-smasher or something. some people are saying that it could cause a global disaster because it could make a black hole that will swallow the earth. and its going to be in august. scientists say that the global disaster is ridiculous and that its not going to happen. has anyone else heard of this article? should we be worried about it?

  1. Well I'm sure the scientist are aware of the dangers.  See scientist have been bitching and working on getting absolute zero(they have only achieved 4 kelvins, until now I think) which at that point their is no movement of atoms. Thus action can cause a black hole.

  2. Its not going to distroy anything. Don't think that, they are taking every caution and making sure things dont go wrong

  3. No, definitely not. If it were true, it would be all over the news and a huge deal. And they wouldn't do the experiment. People have been predicting the end of the world since Biblical times, and we're all still here, aren't we? Don't worry about it, hun. No one knows how much time anyone has on Earth; it's all in God's plan. This doesn't worry me one bit. :)

  4. I've heard of the new atom smasher, but we have several of them accross the world and nothing has happened like that.  This one would be the largest we've ever made, but still.  A black hole generally only happens when a star implodes on itself creating a super powerful gravitational field that sucks things into an oblivion.

I'm not worried at all about this new machine, in fact I'm looking forward to the advances we get out of it.

  5. yes I knew about it, and did you know we already have an atom-smasher here in the US? They teach about it in public schools, where have you been?  Obviously if the one here didn't create a blackhole the other won't either.

  6. No, we are much more likely to succumb to god throwing a rock at us from the sky.

  7. don't worry it won't happen

you are referring to the large hardron colider at CERN

the only thing that's going to happen is the accumulation of massive amounts of data and advances in science

  8. No, you shouldn't be worried.  It's not possible.

You know, think about the fact that the *scientists* are saying it's ridiculous, and it's other people that are making a stink about it.  Shouldn't we trust the scientists when we're talking about science?  It's like if a bunch of doctors told you your headache was nothing to worry about, but some random guy off the street said the doctors were wrong and you're going to die.  Who are you going to listen to?

Why would scientists want to destroy the world?

  9. No. Any of us could be killed at any moment, and that is true throughout our whole lives, and someday we will all die, likely.  So why worry.  Course there are some nasty ways to go.
