'Common spelling mistakes should be accepted into everyday use, not corrected, a professor has said.'

Is this a reflection of the state of our education system?

  11. The message or information is the important thing not doting the I's and T's.  Besides have you not something more important to worry about than someones spelling???  Get a life.

  12. I only wanted to answer this in order to correct SFC_Ollie. You should have used spell checker, because lookie here what you did:

"I guess college students that have this professors (professor's) class also don;t (don't) know about spell check programs either. or (Always begin a sentence with a big letter, sweetie). maybe they are just to (too) lazy to hit a few extra keys".

    Have a nice day!

  13. Wot u on bout? Who spels bad?

I tink spelin in uk is alright.

Of course it is a poor reflection on the state of our education system. People must be able to learn spelling and grammer. Maybe we should ban mobile phones for the under 18's?

  14. As someone who has had trouble with spelling all of his life emotionally I am in favour of the suggestion but my head says that this is a nonsense. Spellings will evolve over the years and I have little doubt that some unacceptable spellings will be eventually accepted. but this is no excuse for jumping the gun. However it would be sad for someone to be marked down on otherwise excellent paper due to the notoriously difficult English spelling. Bad grammar can be the result of sloppy thinking but bad with bad spelling it is not necessarily the case. As you can see I the further I delve into this the more difficult it is for me to say yes or no.

  15. Yes of course spelling mistakes should be corrected, otherwise writing becomes illegible. Take `does` one small word. I`ve seen it spelt deos and more commonly as dose. If we accept wrong spelling, words will not always be spelt wrongly the in same way so imagine how confusing it would get! I only completed 4 years at senior school as I left at 15 with no qualifications but I can manage to spell and punctuate properly, so maybe it is a reflection on the present education system. I think we need to revert back to the three R`s.

  16. It's a reflection of intellectual apathy. It's true that english is a living language, but there was a time when you would not only be expected to know how to spell a word, but the root language as well.

  17. Ah the dumbing down of America. This is the next logical step since we allow grade school children to use calculators to do their math work in school. Lord knows we wouldn't want to impress real 2 + 2 = 4 on their precious little minds. I guess college students that have this professors class also don't know about spell check programs either. or maybe they are just to lazy to hit a few extra keys.

At any rate, accept it in a chat room, not in a school or professional situation.

P S and I didn't even have to use the spell checker on this, isn't that amazing.....

Gee Tree hugger, Did I say I was perfect? And I corrected the punctuation mistake within seconds of posting, even though this spell checker wouldn't have caught that. And oh well I missed a Capitol letter. I guess I am still no more than a B student even after all these years. Now go hug a tree.

  18. Another step down the path of utter stupidity taken by our educators

this guy should get his teeth kicked in for such a stupid idea, then never allowed near a teaching classroom again.  he is just lazy and not wanting to spend time doing his job

sounds like a liberal to me

  19. Ha...ha...No...It may be a reflection, not just our education system, but a reflection of a Liberal concept...If we accept bad spelling we will end up with a load of gibberish instead of a language, but Liberals do everything they can to undermine a society.

  20. It is hardly going to encourage the kids to make an effort with their spelling to get a message like this from a professor.

A good friend of mine struggles with his spelling and my heart goes out to him because i know he gets a bit embarrassed about it.So it should be encouraged in schools for the benefit of the kids.

I am not that bad at spelling myself but i freak out when the spell-checker isn't working on Answers.

  21. No, we should not accept bad spelling. Accept two or more 'variant' (incorrect) spellings of the same word? That would cause more confusion.

In the last three years of my primary school, we had to learn 20 words a week for a spelling test. Something I dreaded as I always got one wrong. (The girl who got them all right got a PhD worked for NASA and then I lost touch. She was an intellectual though, spelling was a game to her.)

Perhaps WE should do the American thing and make a sport out of it aka Spelling Bees. (Whilst we're at it, perhaps also we could have 'Mathletes' as well?)

Rather, I think the language should be made more consistent. Spelling has become easier since Shakespeare's day and language is most definitely organic. Old words atrophy through disuse and new words or meanings are coined yearly.

I would much rather the language be made far more consistent, at least in spelling. We've had the decimalisation of currency and the adoption of metric (SI) units to make things simpler, more efficient,  less prone to error and be better understood. Why can we not do something similar with spelling? We've had "Decimal Day" I say bring on "Standard Spelling Day!"

  22. No we should not. Bad spelling  will looking like a filthy room. Every language has its own rules to write and read. If any body deviate from the given rule, it is not acceptable or comfortable for many. A new reader will be misguided by bad spelling. Gramatically too one should be correct while using a language. Every language will have its own literatures. Bad spelling will effect that language's literature as well.

So always use correct spellings which is best and healthy practice.

  23. I'm a lousy speller and I disagree with this. We need to understand each other. I wrote for too many years without consulting the Websters, other than definitions- now all of my habits must be unlearned. Its' almost like learning a second language.

  24. That depend on the reader.
