Should we encourage our kids to use the amateur colored ball instead of the nba ball?

i think it's makes more sense if we see kids playing on the court or on the streets/playgrounds with the red and white ball. NBA ball is so passe and there's no way these kids will all be playing in the NBA. kids should develop their game around amateur rules, basketball included

  1. yes i no most likely none of them will make nba but for some of them playing with an nba ball just gives them confidence, a mental thing which is very important to develop their skills at young age.

  2. I'm 15 and any good quality ball for me will do. I didn't really see someone using an NBA ball to symbolize something. For me, they only use it because of the brand.

  3. you hit it right there.

i just passed a school ground the other day and noticed more kids are playing with the colored balls than before. i wish that with the olympics,it would catch up to become the fad. it does more to the game than just a ball. it's a good props for emphasizing team basketball not AND1 streetball type.

  4. All I have to say is that you should try to stick with the regular basketballs because you get a better feel of the game when you are trying to develop shooting skills.

  5. What up room mate,

To me a ball is a ball.  i like the idea of teaching kids the international game in that there is a bigger focus on team play and fundamentals.

But i don't know that the ball makes all that big of a difference.  i think a good reason to have our kids use the nba type of ball- is that as they advance and play in organized basketball league- they are more likely going to use an NBA type basketball than an amateur ball.  To me the color of the ball is less important than how the game is played.

i guess each parent is personally responsible for how they raise their kids- and when i have kids- i'd be proud of them if they made the NBA, or an Euro-league- or did something else in life- but i'd probably go with an NBA type of ball and encourage them to have NBA hoop dreams- but ultimately to just play the game hard, and play it right and to not get too big headed.  I'd encourage my kids to play ball more to develop character than to just make big $$$.
