  1. She needs to get an inexpensive older car.  Im not saying that to be snooty.  I am saying that because she is a brand new driver, and its her first car.  I would bet money that it will have been wrecked atleast twice in the first year.

    Statistics.

  2. A convertible? For your 16 year old daughter??

She is just starting to drive, so you should probably get her something a bit safer..ie. no convetibles, jeeps, minivans etc.

A nice SUV will be safe.

Also, teens get in acccidents, so you don't want to get her something too nice, because there is a good chance something will happen to it.

How about a (used) Ford Escape or Honda CRV. They both get good gas mileage for an SUV and are very safe.

Plus, you said if she got a convertible she'd have to pay for it. She's already going to be head under water with the car payment AND insurance payments AND gas. And being a teenaged girl, it would be awesome to drive a sports car, but I would much rather drive an SUV my parents paid for, then having to get a job to pay of my car. She doesn't know yet, but no 16 year old wants that responsibility and no teenager wants to HAVE to keep a job.

Have her save that money towards college. Or keep it in the bank for when she really does need it.

  3. She needs to make up her mind as to what she wants, and then you decide what you will pay accordingly. She isn't going to get a sports car or a new (or partially new) SUV for $4000, or even $15,000. It's just not going to happen. You'd be better off buying her a used vehicle of some sort--I drive a 1999 Saturn (I'm 17) and I love it. It gets great gas mileage and it's a nice little car.

  4. If she has a job and can make the car payments, she should be allowed to get the sporty coupe/convertable.   If she falls behind on car payments, let her see the consequences. Your daughter will learn responsibility.  It is her decision.  You gave her the choice.

  5. Whatever she can afford to wreck and replace.

I'm not even kidding ... an awful LOT of young, inexperienced drivers total their first cars.

I would not recommend either an SUV or a sporty car for a young driver.  A safe sedan is best (of COURSE she doesn't want one!), but her life is more important than the "coolness" factor.

The SUV will get really crappy mileage and it's  not suitable for a first-time driver.  The center of gravity in an SUV is higher than in a car, meaning that rollovers and/or hard-to-control movements are more likely.

A teeny tiny sporty coupe is just ... *shudders* ... no protection at all in a collision.  They are deathtraps.  Honest.

  6. I would suggest a car that she doesn't mind wrecking...

about 50% of my friends, including my sister and I wrecked our first car.

maybe get her sporty coupe after her first wreck..

    lol sorry...

BUT  have her look at her hobbies and such, I LOVE having a SUV because I can bring my dog and put things in the back. But i love camping and all...

See what car will fit her "lifestyle"

  7. Wow what a giving parent, Either way I would make her work for it. Often times a child given a car, especially nice car, will not take care of it because it wasnt their hard work that got it for them, so they have no appreciation for it. As far as saftey i would go with an SUV. SUV seems smarter anyway with no payment, and a trade in, whether she wants it or not, she should be happy to get it. Good luck, I hope she knows how lucky she is~

  8. I would say go for the SUV, or a crossover of some sort.  I know she wants a convertible, but most of my friends who have convertibles have wrecked them.  (They seem to want to show off their nice new car.)  I got an 04 Saturn Vue for my 16th (still 16) and I absolutely love it.  It's not great on gas, I get about 18 mpg.

If she has a job and can afford the nicer car, I say let her try it, only if she is very responsible.  But if she falls behind, then you are stuck with the payments.  Good Luck!

  9. Why not buy her a toyota corolla. Its great with gas mileage.

  10. It must be nice to have that option...h**l my daughters will be getting a beater car that gets them from A to B(and yes I know ALL about cars so I won't get them one that is a copmlete p.o.s.[piece of sh*t])...pay their own insurance, and gas etc... And I match what they save up for one but I think (in my opinion..so don't take offense cause I'm not tryin to be mean to you) they should learn that life is not about a bunch of hand outs and you have to work for what you want.

But I guess just let her know that if she wants the sporty car then she is totally on her own with it...she will have to pay ALL the payments and insurance etc... and if she goes with the SUV then all she will be paying is the insurance and gas.

Also tell her that she will be working so much to pay for that car that she is never gonna have anytime to go show it off,so whats the point in getting it if she can not joy ride in it every once in a while.
