Should we invest in renewable energy and alternative fuels?

Lawmakers only focus on these high gas prices. I think they should look into investing funds into renewable energy and alternative fuels.

This is the only way we can successfully become energy independent. And these fossil burning fuels are ruining the environment.

For example they could put _______ billion dollars into automobile companies so they could lower the cost of hybrid cars, and _____ billion in the production of these vehicles.

Sure...but let private enterprise do it.  Does anyone seriously think men like Edison would have worked tirelessly the way they did and give us the advancements they did if the government controlled the process?!  Edison took the money from his inventions and invested in work and materials to make future inventions.  If the government controlled our energy...what would be the incentive?

In the meantime, why aren't we using what we have?!

I believe renewable energy and alternative fuels are important, but it's not that simple.  The cost of something like solar energy is low in the long term, but extremely high in the short term.  Ethanol may be cheap, but we don't know what sort of environmental impact its use may lead to.  Wind power isn't transported easily enough, so it's not entirely viable to use.  There are other ideas out there that could work well, including water power generated from turbines that use the ocean currents.  But all of them require a large amount of cash input, and that's not easy to come by, especially with our economy today.

Who is we? Do you mean the govt? We should allow the free market to determine which energy source is best. If there is money to be made in alternate fuel sourdes, then someone will invest in it. T. Boone Pickens has invested hundreds of millions in wind power in Texas. He must believe that he can make money from wind power. Let private industry choose the winning technologies and fuel sources, not the govt.

State and federal govt have already invested billions in research in alternate energy sources and conservation. Enough already; let's drill for more oil! Oil is much cheaper than solar power.

The problem is not alternative sources of energy.

The problem is affordable alternative sources of energy.

It makes no sense, to replace fossil fuels

With something that cost 3 times as much.

To many people assume, that we we spend enough money,

We can come up with an affordable alternative fuel source.

But science doesn't work that way.

You can spend the money, invent new fuel sources.

But that doesn't make them affordable.
