My hubby is a chef, I work in a club ( bar) and cafe at night and work in a call centre during the day as a team leader. To buy a house in Wollongong, we would both have to work full time to cover the mortgage. Houses on the gold coast are roughly $75000 cheaper. Therefore, I could get away with only working 3-4 days a week. SHOULD WE MOVE?

  1. where are your friends and family? will you miss them? do you enjoy the gold coast? Answer these questions and you will probably find your answer. u can always buy a smaller place in the gong

  2. Given the flexibility of your careers I say go for it and kids are still young so its not like you uprooting them from friends sports ect

  3. I would say no to moving for purely economic benefit.  However, if you will be working less hours then your quality of life will improve.  But if you are far away from friends and family, who will you spend the extra time with?  Of course you will make new friends but it's never the same.

Up to you and your husband and maybe ask advice from people who know you better than us.

  4. How sure are you of the difference in house prices? 75k cheaper on the GC doesn't sound right to me - the coast is generally very expensive. Also, there should be plenty of chef and bar work on the Gold Coast, but have you looked into call centre work availability? The GC is a tourist area and most of that type of work will be in Brisbane.

If you're happy in Wollongong and have friends and a support network there, you should think very carefully about moving for purely economic reasons, particularly if you're not very well informed about the financial benefits of the move.
