Assuming that we would also raise speeding fines and penaltys for anyone exceeding the new limit.

  1. Vehicle engineering technology may have improved , but the nut holding the wheel is just as unreliable as ever. Until drivers stop treating cars as status symbols or expensive toys  it would be madness to go faster. There should also be an IQ test as part of learning to drive, restrict low scores to owning only roller skates.

  2. I drive over 50k per year and would say do not increase the speed limit, the roads are far too congested as it is, allowing us to go faster is just a no brainer, have you tried to do 100mph, i bet you can't do it for more than 2 mins without somebody pulling out on you.

  3. What with all the foreign drivers with illegal or no driving licence, who have never taken a driving test, and the unsafe foreign lorries. Lets make the roads safer first please!!!.

  4. Even as an advanced driver, I think 100 is too fast. The diferential in speed between other traffic and that of lorries would be huge.

  5. Yes, I think we should raise the speed limit, but only to 75 MPH. We should also drive with our headlight on at all times!

Hope you all have a good week...

  6. no if anythying we should lower it to prevent further road accidents and there may be a possibility of reduces traffic on the motorway

  7. Yes I thinks so. I passed my driving test and drove in Germany for 10 years and there was never any problems with speeding  or as many road accidents there.

You are free on the Autobahns to drive as fast as your car was built to do so you don't see any agressive drivers who want to overtake others going slow.

  8. dude come to washington d.c. and northern virginia and maryland then ask this question if you do the math only about 15% of the people in the D.C. metro area are good drivers

but i think there should be something like the autobahn in the U.S. and only people that no how to drive can drive on it

i no how to drive i hit 120mph on surface streets

  9. No, I,ve learned the faster you are going the harder it is to stop. And if the roads are wet and you hydroplane it could mean the difference in rolling over or not.

  10. no

  11. if they raised the limit to 100mph you'd still get the occassional idiot pushing their luck, 100's a bit optomistic, maybe 80mph would be exceptable on motorways

  12. The upper speed limit on motorways should be raised to 75 or 80 mph at the same time there should be a lower limit introduced of a minimum speed 40 mph on level ground, there should be a mandatory rule that vehicles that drop below the minimum on hills must turn their hazard warning lights on untill they regain the minimum speed, also the minimum engine size allowed on motorways should be raise to 200cc's.

  13. I dont think so ... 100mph seems a little too fast. People are gonna exceed the limit whatever it is, so when people start exceeding the 100mph it doesnt sound a good idea to me.

  14. NO NO NO NO NO!

Riasing the speed limit that much would just be crazy

70 mph is fast enough , speed kills that's a proven fact

every day i see people tearing up the motorway at 100 mph or more when you consider hat lorries only do 55-60mph tops

hitting the back of one doing 100+mph would be like hitting a wall at 50,

  15. It would seem that all against raising the speed limit get a thumbs down.

Looks like i'll get a few as well

It just would not be safe for all of the reasons stated.

80mph and I might have been in favour, but 100 is just plain silly,

  16. yes, the speed limits are outdated, cars have moved on since then. to keep the moaners happy they could make it 20 outside schools to compensate

  17. In theory, motorways should be the safest places to drive because everyone is going in the same direction, there are no corners and no junctions. But we still have accidents on a daily basis on motorways. And why do these accidents happen? Speed. So personally I don't think it would be a good idea to legally raise the speed limit. I use motorways every day (I drive for a living) and I am quite happy to sit in the inside lane at 60mph.

  18. yes yes yes please do it tomorrow

  19. well i think they should keep the speed limit as it is because it aint the speed limit at all whats the problem half of the people cant even drive proberly and dont think of calling me sad because i am against it . the reason i am against it is that i work on there cleaning up the road traffic accidents and putting the cones out and it was only last year i lost my best mate because a women was doing 120mph so i would think that people should consider to learn how to handle there cars before they speed too many familys and kids are dieing on our roads beleve me i am on the bloody front line and i see it all and it aint nice

  20. Yes!!  Or even better, keep the 70mph limit for all the old biddies, and slower vehicles, and have a double fast lane with no speed restriction but a minimum limit of 80mph, it would have to be illegal to use it unless you were maintaining a minimum speed of 80mph, that way it would minimise the chance of slow drivers pulling out infront of someone and causing a crash.

  21. what for, its rather academic having a raised speed limit on motorways where your lucky if during the day you can go from Junction 1 of M6 up to manchester without haing to slow down to a complete hault!.

There is only certian times when i can hope to get 70mph average speed. Adding and extra 30mph will only increase the speed of the law breakers...

Insted of cars whizzing passed at 90-100mph up n down the M6 they will be doing it at 130mph.... even in FOG n black ice!!.

If the Police set up speed traps over ever slip road and ever bridge on every motorway, by the end of the week  every regular road user would be banned and billions of people would be complaining they have lost thier licences, as a LARGE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DRIVE ABOVE THE 70MPH SPEED LIMIT. I reacon the police could make thousands of speeding fines an hour!.

  22. 100, in my opinion,  is too much.

80 might be decent, since lots of people drive like that anyways.

There are, however, too many careless and unsafe drivers, and making cars go from 70 to 100 mph more than DOUBLES the energy of the cars, making for a much deadlier accidents (far less time to react, double the braking distance, and much more kinetic energy)

Keep in mind, as well, that we must share the roads with big 16-wheeler trucks, which certainly are NOT designed to travel safely at 100 MPH.  People already get impatient with those trucks at speeds now, just think what kind of congestion and potential accidents they might cause with traffic moving at even higher speeds.

Besides, cars get better fuel economy around 55-65 mph

  23. no speed limit on auto ban in Germany, seems to work there.braking systems on vehicles have improved since traffic speed limits introduced. take the best of the answers you get and go for change in law, you have a suporter here.if peaple dont want to be close to "speeding" cars , lorries etc. let them stick to the ordinary roads and not the moterways

  24. there are several problems with raising the national speed limit to 100mph. for one most cars although they are able to go this fast are not designed to go this fast. suspension and control of a vehicle is very different past 75mph. at 100 mph your reaction time is cut nearly in half, leaving less room for corrections while driving. However going 100 mph vrs going 75 mph in an accident will have little to no bearing on the out come of the accident. The laws of inertia tells us that no matter how fast some thing is hit the out put of energy will be the same. meaning if i hit you going twenty mile an hour and your doing ten the damage will be the same as going 100 hitting some one doing 65 or 75.

  25. 100 km/h is already too fast, what more 100mph or 100mpms!!!

    (mpms = Miles per millisecond!!!)

  26. Absolutely NOT!!!

We have to many today that refuse to use common sense while behind the wheel now.   Tailgating,   eating,  phones,   games,   laptops,  s*x acts,   breast feeding,   these are all conduct that I have personally witnessed others doing while passing me,  or me them.      Add to this the number who drive  without adequate rest,  while ill,    taking medications with or without prescription and true need.

The safest traffic flow is one in which all vehicles move at approximately the same speed with adequate space around all vehicles.   Your proposal would make safety on our highways impossible.

  27. 100 MPH may be a little too fast!  75MPH or 85MPH sounds more reasonable.  The only reason the speed limits are so low is because it makes people "feel safe".  A good example of "feeling safe"  is the 55MPH act passed by congress back in the 70's.  Sure it was about conserving energy, but most of people felt safer with the lower speed limit.  You can still get hurt going 55MPH, just like any other speed.  No speed is safe period!  So let us go faster and be happy, or most of us will do it anyway!

  28. NO.  The speed limit is there for a reason - SAFETY.

There are a lot of people who WORK on the roads - Maintenance Staff.  There have been a lot of people SERIOUSLY INJURED and KILLED because of other people breaking the speed limits.
