Should we replace the steering wheel column on a manual column gear shift truck?

We have a 1982 Ford F100 pick up. The engine runs totally awesome; but unfortunately the truck will not go into gear. It is three on the tree and sometimes it will go into third gear; but it will not go into first gear or second gear. This just suddenly happened. No pops, no nothing.

Should we just replace the column on the truck?

  1. id check the linkage on it first, then check the bushings that go in the linkeaeg rods they ay have worn out in it,thats the most common cause for that happening, its possible the shifter shaft in the column is worn out also, but id check all the linkage before i tore in to the steering coluum on it,good luck.

  2. That's not an easy to find part, at least in my opinion.  Have you thought about putting a floor shifter on it?

  3. I would check the linkage first for any worn or broken pieces. A column like that may be hard to find and could result to converting to a floor shifter.

  4. rebuild the trans.

  5. dont be too quick to blame the column have you checked to see if the shift linkage under thev truck is intact
