Question:

Should we use plastic bottles to make pennies?

Since plastic waterbottles are bad for our environment and are just taking up space in landfills, should we use that plastic to make pennies? I mean, it takes more than a penny to make a penny, so the logical thing to do would be to stop making pennies from copper and use all that plastic for something useful, is that a good idea, any other ideas?

  1. 1st of all we need to get rid of pennies and nickels. When it cost more to produce them than they are worth, they have past the expiration date. If we look at all "energy" cashiers are spending to give change back and all the struggle and energy consumers are using to pay exactly on the pennie, AKKAMAAN.

2nd, for gods sake, in this era of all computer power, lets start prize tagging everthing with prizes that includes the sales taxes. I know the sales taxes are very complex and different in each state of US,  AKKAMAAN, let the computers work with the math, they do it in micro seconds.

3rd, things can still be price tagged with pennies, just let the final check out receipt be rounded to nearest 10cent or dime.

At the end of the day the store wont have more than 5 cents in average over or under charge. AKKAMAAN, if they can make it that way in "underdeveloped parts" of europe, why cant we make it here in US?

4th, , to get ahead of the rest of the world in this, AKKAMAAN, lets get rid of the dimes and one and five doller bills aswell, round the checkout receipt to nearest quarter, and  give us a five dollar coin, size like a nickel but twice as thick.

5th, AKKAMAAN, resize the dollar coin so it cant be mistaken for a quarter.

6th, as far as plastic bottles goes, you are right that a lot of them ends up at the landfill, which only shows our recycling system need a lot of improvement. See this video from a recycle paper plant, shows how much, AKKAMAAN, about 15% of recycled paper is, recyclable plastic, glass and metal that have to go to landfill.

  2. I see tons of pennies on the ground.  They are basically worthless or otherwise people would pick them up right?

I think we should just eliminate pennies.  Then they would be a collectors item like the two dollar bill and people would definitely pick them up!!!

You idea is a good one though...

  3. Logical thing is to eliminate pennies and nickels.

Go to dimes, 50 cent, $2 and $10 coins.

Think of it this way, When I was born a loaf of bread was a nickel. Currency degradation has made penny and nickel redundant.

If people want to continue using them in pricing that adds up to larger amounts, and round to a dime, or include in electronic billing, OK, but get those irrelevant coins out of our change.

Use your plastic to make dimes and 50 cent pieces, but not plastic made from estrogen! People should not be handling it that much.
