Question:

Should wolves be killed on sight?

People say that I'm too sensitive , because i think that you shouldn't kill a wolf just because you can see it. I say that if it kills your animals, or attacks you or family then you can kill it but not because you just happen to see it on a road or near it's den. so are they right in telling me that I'm too sensitive, or are they wrong?

  1. Wolves provide an important control for vermin, but are not a threat.

When man encroached on their territory, they competed for livestock.

  2. Put simply, NO.

  3.    You're not too sensitive. Wolves fill a valuable ecological niche in the wild, and there is no reason to kill them on sight. They are intellegent enough that they can be conditioned to avoid both humans and livestock, if authorities have the patience to do so. (There will be the occasional animal that might have to be put down for lifestock attacks). Despite Jack London stories, there are no documented attacks by wolves on humans that I'm aware of. We simply dislike them because they have until recent centuries been effective competitors with us for wildlife.

And wolves are the foretathers of our modern dogs. Though they are different in important ways, there is still something in their very makeup that we found worth making a part of our lives. It would be very sad to see wolves die away because of irrational fear.
