buy them when you get in to the apartment.....Should we start buying things now, like dish sets, bedding, bathroom sets, and just store them or wait?

  1. Please, don't rely on a "house warming" to furnish your home or apartment.  It isn't other peoples responsibility to do that...it is yours.  Also, do NOT ask for gifts for a house warming....that is just tacky as all get-out.

Start buying now, watch for sales, and get a climate-controlled storage unit if need be to store things in.

  2. You can have a house warming party with gifts and everything once in your life - and that is when you buy your first home.  Otherwise it is very tacky, don't count on nice things.  If you invited me, and if I showed up, I'd buy you a house plant.

  3. Buy as you need (or as you know you'll need soon and find on sale).  It's better to make a list of what you know you'll need rather than to impulse shop (impulse buying tends to cost you extra).  If you buy too far in advance, you're just tying up your money on what you may or may not actually use.  Housewarming parties usually involve food and/or booze, not gifts, and asking for gifts is very rude.

  4. The things you will use everyday, go ahead and buy them.(Like eating utensils and a shower curtain) No point on waiting if you will suffer without them. And keep in mind that even with the house warming party, you still won't get everything you need.

  5. When I got out of college, my goal was to save up enough money to buy a house.  Every month I allocated a certain amount of my income to stock up on house things- especially kitchen items.  I also got a used dining room set, sanded it and re-finished it.

When I was 24 I had saved enough and it was a HUGE relief not to have to buy everything since I had furniture bills and painting and new carpet and stuff to get too.

I never had a house-warming party, so don't rely on those for anything other than dumb little decorations, candles, etc.  If you wait and don't have at least $5,000 in the bank, you will probably be sorry.  I think that's the total I spent on small furnishings, linens, curtains, and kitchen items.

  6. why would be expecting a house warming party for an apartment?

  7. When I got my first apartment I had started going to yard/garage sales and buing furniture and putting what ever did not fit in to my bedroom at my moms house or she could use until I left and took it with me, i put it in a storage locker.  It took me three months of shopping and at 50 bucks a month for storage it was worth it because then you can just load the locker into a u haul with the rest of the stuff so it is all packed and you can be done moving really quickly.

  8. I would.  Store them and keep the receipts in case you want to return them or switch them out for something else.  You may not get everything you need or want at a house warming party, even if you have a registry.
