its best to keep coffee at room temperature.

  4. We do to prolong the shelf life. Beans are oily.

  5. well if you seal in an air tight container the coffee beans would be fresher in the freezer but you do not have to freeze them

  6. No.  Freezing them causes the oils to break down so the flavor is lost when thawed.  The best way to store coffee is in an airtight container stored in a cool, dry, dark place.

  7. Coffee has four main enemies against freshness: air, heat, light and moisture. At first, freezing doesn’t seem to contain many of the offending enemies. However, appearances can be deceiving.

Roasting of the beans gives coffee much of its flavor. The roasted beans are porous. Unfortunately the beans can absorb other unwanted flavors besides the coffee flavor you want. Freezers often contain many odors you might not want in your coffee. Some flavors might be nice, but no one wants to drink onion or seafood flavored coffee.

Along with absorbing flavors, the coffee can also absorb unwanted moisture. Moisture can cause a deterioration of the coffee beans resulting in flavor loss. The more times you take coffee into and out of the freezer, the more moisture may be absorbed into the bean. If you decide that you must freeze some large quantities of coffee, only freeze it one time. After you take it out of the freezer, use it within 1-2 weeks.

The oils present in roasted coffee beans are an important part to making a good cup of coffee. Freezing, however, can break down the flavorful oils in roasted coffee beans. When the oils break down, flavor is compromised giving another reason to stay away from putting your coffee in the freezer.

To sum up, freezing coffee has definite disadvantages. It is better to keep coffee stored in a cool and dry place, in a well sealed container away from light. Freezing coffee is possible, and does the least damage if you only freeze it once. Make sure to seal the beans as tightly as possible to prevent moisture and odors from getting in. Your best bet is to only buy enough coffee for consumption within 1-2 weeks. That way you won’t even need to go near the freezer and you can enjoy the coffee at the peak of its flavor!
