Should you leave the plastic wrapper on a portugese sausage when you bbq it?

My friend told me that all his south american friends do it that way. I told him he was crazy and that he was probably putting alot of bad chemicals into his food by heating the plastic like that. I just want to know what you think, what your family does, etc.

  1. you take the plastic wrap off but you leave the clear casing on the sausage

  4. Sounds strange to me.  Wouldn't the plastic melt... then how do you get it off the sausage?
