Not only are they nocturnal, but they are also not afraid of the dark- in the wild, they live underground- and light will disturb them.

One you leave on at night? No. Hamsters are nocturnal, so a bright light at night will confuse them and perhaps prevent them from getting the exercise and nutrition they normally get at night.
