Shoulder injuries force out Quintin Berry and Max Scherzer – MLB Update
According to a leading sports website, Detroit Tigers’ rookie Quintin Berry has injured his right shoulder in a diving attempt. Berry, who has been absolutely brilliant for the Tigers this season, injured his shoulder diving in the outfield on Josh Reddick’s
double in the sixth inning.
Although the Tigers were leading 8-1 at that stage of the game, Berry showed he is one of the most committed players on Tigers’ big league roster. Berry tried 100 percent to get to the ball but he came up short try to take the catch in left field.
After making the throw to second base from his knees, he fell to the ground, screaming in pain. Berry then walked off the field and was diagnosed with a right shoulder contusion, the source further added. Manager Jim Leyland looked extremely worried at the
end of the contest as he thought it was a collarbone issue but the X-rays reports came out to be negative.
"I felt it when I dove and hit the ground; I had my arm extended," Berry said. "I just pinched it a little bit ... a lot. I was worried a little bit because my arm went dead. As we got up here I was able to move it around and it didn't seem as serious. I'll
be good to go tomorrow. I'm going to go in there and make sure I let them know I'm good."
Another player for the Tigers, Max Scherzer also suffered a shoulder injury in a game against the Oakland Athletics. Scherzer pitched two plus innings before he was replaced by Darin Downs on the mound. Scherzer also had an MRI scan and the Tigers revealed
that he will need at least couple of days off from throwing.
"The MRI was fine. You could see the inflammation in the deltoid, so it's treating it and trying to get the inflammation out," Scherzer said. "I might be able to make my next start."
After the dive, Berry took his gloves off and was seen gripping his right shoulder. Tigers immediately sent out the athletics trainer Kevin Rand who helped him get off the field. Leyland replaced him with Andy Dirks, who moved over from the right field.
Avisail Garcia patrolled the right field area following Berry’s injury.
