Question:

Shoulder pain and popping noises?

Ok, I've had this pain for maybe 2 years now. I know its due to my shoulder slumping during school. I try to sit straight and roll them back, but of course that is impossible to do thru lectures. I had the pain, then it sort of went away until now. ITs not my back pack ( i carry it on the other shoulder). i've been to a chiropractor, doctor, and bone specialist doctor. They told me nothing was wrong, that i was just "double jointed' and it was the way my bones were placed. We took x rays and nothing seemed wrong. Its really not my shoulder, more my shoulder blade. also, when i move my shoulder there is a TON of popping noises. I know some is normal, but this is like a lot. So what do you recommend, a shoulder brace?

  1. Sounds to me, Becca, like you should change your medical care professionals.  First off, "double jointed" is not an appropriate medical diagnosis (not in Ortho, or any field).  There are a number of things that could be causing your discomfort and the 'popping' sensation you mention, not the least of which is your rotator cuff (rather than the blade itself).

To expound a bit on the 'popping' sensation you're feeling, popping felt during shoulder movement can happen when a tendon rolls over a bony bump. The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is formed where the shoulder blade meets the collarbone. This joint tends to wear out earlier than other joints and can also start to pop and click with shoulder movement.

In any case, the good news is most cases of popping or snapping in the shoulder are not serious. They often can be helped by a well-rounded exercise program designed by a physical or occupational therapist.

    All the best...hope this helps.

Edit - You may also want to mention 'Snapping Scapula' syndrome if the pain/popping sensation is more lower than higher in your back.
