Question:

Shouldn't community-work be performed by everybody?

It seems only fair that all of us contribute in the well-being of our society.

  1. That idea kind of goes against the freedoms that this country was founded on.

    There has been talk of requiring college students or high school students to do a certain amount of community service before they can graduate.  Some schools even do this.  However, the debate about is that 1.  This is almost like slavery.  It is forcing people into work they do not want to do.  and 2.  It cheapens the community service because it is forced upon the people participating.  Kind of makes it a humiliating experience.  This might mean that later in life the student will be unwilling to volunteer for the service.

    Also, how would you determine who gets to do what service?  There are some jobs that are pretty good and some that are pretty bad.  If everyone were required to work then there would be a lot of fighting and complaining about how the work was assigned.  I do not see that helping society too much.  In fact, that alone might be a reason for not doing this.
