It depends what they are using them for.  If they have a large family or go off-road, then it is fine.  But if they're just using them for daily commute, then yes.

difficult two sided question, with many answers....

On one hand, if a person wants to lay out the cash for the vehical, and is willing to pay for the fuel for that vehical, why should they not ba able to buy it..this is Amrica, land of the free, progress etc....Kind of like cigarettes, we know they are bad, they put warnings on the packs, insurance is high, people die, but they are legal, and the government doesn't prohibit them.

On the other hand, fuel cost are high, more cars get better fuel mileage than huge land barges, fuel is a finite unit, eventually it will run out, why are governments dragging their heels to come up with alternates? Big oil is big money and many pockets are getting filled from it. Public tansportation is not widely available in the USA, especially in the more rural areas. I for one would use a public system if it was out there, but in the small town I live in it is not.

So I guess as long as the government allows the manufacturers to make these huge SUVs, people are going to buy them, and suck up the fuel that it is within their rights to buy....maybe if they put some tax or something to own one of these large fuelish beast, more than the "sin tax" they already have.

No. There are a number of reasons people drive an SUV. My wife has a Subaru Forester and it gets good mileage, is safe and does really good in inclement weather.

Why should we be? Because of "Global Warming"? Show me ONE link between man and "Global Warming"...ONE! There are none! Why should I be embarrassed to drive my SUV when fat Albert Gore flies around on a private jet to preach to lemmings like you who believe his Inconvenient Truth BS. A movie so riddled with lies and misrepresentation that it should have been a fiction movie. My expedition drinks fossil fuel like a pro. My carbon footprint is enormous and I love it!

yes they should completely there is no use for them i live in Canada in the winter see them in the ditch  all the time when i drive by in my Toyota corolla 2wd .they need to be extra taxed because they are a waste of every thing.

only if they never go offroad with them...which is actually a sickening amount of drivers who would be better suited with a  minivan...if there was shame in gas guzzling

i drive a ford expedition.  i live in a snowy and icy place during the winter.  i live 8 miles from town. and there are 5, sometimes 6 people in my family,(depending on if we have my husbands kid.)  i think i need the four wheel drive and the extra space in the bigger suv.  now, NO, im not embarrased.

Why,I can afford the gas so what?What is someone with a large family supposed to do?You tree huggers will never be happy anyways.Why is Toyota against the increase in the Federal mileage?Do you waste gas in any way,you drive only when necessary?

No, People can drive what they want to drive. There is no provable link between man and "global warming" (actually a natural cycle of heating and cooling of the earth). I'll do you one better I have a 36 year old SUV (Jeep Wagoneer) with a 400+hp motor that I drive and a F350 Diesel that consumes dead dinosaurs at an alarming rate. I use the Jeep for hunting and bad weather. I use the truck for my farm and carrying the family around. I also ride a motorcycle not for fuel savings but because it's fun.

I want to know who are you to tell anybody they should be embarrassed about anything. Shouldn't you be embarrassed about being so petty and narrow minded.

Some should - some feel safer, like if they live in snowy regions - yeah, can always do a 4WD car or AWD car, but maybe they need the space to transport dogs.

Personally I would say yes!  I hate suv's (sux) and do not understand why people still need to drive around in these big vehicles blocking other people's view and guzzling gas when there is a gas crisis anyway and the prices are so high.  You can get a bigger vehicle that is more sensible if you have a family or need to transport things.  Most people who have them, do not need it and just buy them because for some crazy ridiculous reason they are still popular and they want to "out-do" their neighbor.  Really they are ugly and not very practical.  Get rid of them people please!!!

I'm not. Why should I be? I make enough money to buy one, insure it, maintain it, and keep fuel in it.

I would suppose those who live in the cities or suburbs who never ever use the 4-wheel drive capability certainly SHOULD be.

It was interesting the other day to see a CNN story about a number of the US built SUV's which got less that stellar side-crash ratings.

My Brother lives in a rural area with harsh winters, and has a gravel road... his wife has an SUV, he has a 4x4 pickup for the ranch, and he drives a 1995 Toyota Celica (40mph) to work (75 miles each way).

I have a standard light pick-up for my work and a bicycle.

I LAUGH at all the "soccer mommies" driving their Suburbans, Explorers, and Escalades here in suburban San Carlos California... I think they should be DOUBLY taxed.
