after all as a solution to poverty it has failed miserably. and how can continue to justify the robbing of one group of citizens simply to give the money to someone else? charity belongs in the province of charity.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -- Thomas Jefferson

  1. SUre, let's start with corporate welfare, since it drains our system more than social welfare.

  2. just give me my 40 acres and a mule and then STFU~!

  3. Yes. It never should've been created in the first place.

OK, Society expects gov't to do something for those down on their luck (despite the inefficient civil servant largesse it creates) but at least make it a LOAN, with time limits, that recipients must repay.

  4. You cannot abandon people to starve to death and still call yourself a human being.

    Find a better solution.

  5. what kind of a question is that? some people need it to survive. not everyone is as blessed as you as to what kind of education and job they have. some mothers of large families are abandoned and left to raise the children on there own, and without welfare would probably end up homeless. Its not a matter of how hard someone is willing to work; sometimes that is not enough. I'm sure you know that though.

Of course there are people out there who abuse this system but there are people out there who truly need it, and for some its still not enough but if we can aid our nation why wouldn't you want it? who knows you might not be so lucky in a few years and might need it yourself.

I believe that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another. - Thomas Jefferson

  6. In the old days, churches and families took care of people. Then again, in the old days our jobs weren't being sent overseas and outsourced to people who will work for a nickel an hour.

  7. The belt on welfare needs to be tightened, but not abolished. I have seen too many people play the system like a puppet and that's not ok.

  8. My mother works as a visiting nurse in the city we live in and she visits women who have recently had a baby, and are referred to her agency for visits to make sure the woman and the baby are healthy. She sees the people on a daily basis that are living off of welfare and from what she describes it sounds like welfare is a solution to some peoples' temporary problems, but in the long run it enables many people to live a lifestyle which will only make their problems worse.

The only positive thing it does for many people on welfare is ensure that there are finances to keep the baby happy

  9. Charity requires poverty to exist

  10. Yes we should. The welfare system leaves people on both sdes feel bitter. I say take government -funded welfare away and follow the instructions in the Bible. Let the family take care of their own. This would also force the lazy to work or starve.

  11. Yes, and unionize panhandling.

  12. Who should we start with first??

The Veterans?? Who make up 1 in 4 welfare recipiants.

The Children under the age of 5?? Who number in the low millions and who are 64% of the welfare population.

the elderly? Who didn't have access to pensions, 401k's, and retirement? They number 6 million that are under the poverty level.

Which of these groups  would you like to start with first?

84% of welfare recipiants receive assistance for less than 2 years.

  13. I for one do not like people who get something for not doing a honest days work. I am for a different method of handout. Doing volunteer work helping others. Then give them a stipend not money but material gifts for their efforts.

As far as businesses receiving tax write offs I think that there is a need for a certain amount of credits so they can offer work incentives and implement new innovations to increase productivity.

  14. If you want to kill a man, pay him to do nothing.

    Felix Leclerc

  15. Noppe because people really really need it

at the same time, we should make sure the system is not being exploited (which i suspect is the case)

  16. Yes make it short term only there are a ton of freeloaders draining the system make those lazy b******s get a job soon not just pretend to. How about the elderly receive benefits as normal the rest of these feeloaders have 5 months tops kids or not 5 months is enough to work somwhere. the problem is welfare pays better than some jobs so there is no incentive for people with no selfrespect or ambition to do anyting.

  17. well... how do you define "failed miserably"?

we have a fairly low poverty rate compared to the majority of nations... some may say that means it's working...

those nations with larger welfare programs HAVE EVEN LOWER poverty rates, like some in Europe... some may say that means we're not doing enough...

I don't think I've ever seen a nation that had no welfare program that had anywhere near as low poverty rates...

  18. No, because while there are some freeloaders out there. The rest actually need the assistance they are getting.

  19. i would say no becuase people actually need it to live becuase there paycheck doesnt allow them to get food after they have paid bills and things but on the other hand theres the free loaders who will get welfare just to not work. but i think they should only give it 2 people who work.

  20. My little family is in desperate need of assistance at the moment, and the lame thing is, we can't get it. I have a relative who is a case worker, and he visits homes in which the father is a drunk who watches TV all day and the mother has two children, neither of them work and they get food, medical, and bills paid by the government. I'm out trying to work, have a wife who's about to have a baby, and am working on a degree - and we get nothing except pregnancy medical help.

What our welfare system needs is to get rid of the freeloaders. That would reduce the swelling burden on taxpayers and also allow the people who the system is designed for to get TEMPORARY help, as opposed to sustaining freeloaders for their entire lives.

  21. No In some cases its justified,What should be stopped are the people that come to this country get on Welfare move back to their own country and still collect checks

  22. Pres. Clinton got the ball rolling but Bush dropped it.  Still, a lot of reforms and advances were made.

  23. But then you're just proposing another "solution" that won't work.

Personally I'd rather live in a society where people with problems are helped.  What would you rather have?  A neighbour with mental problems who's starving or just a neighbour with mental problems?  Who's going to pose more of a problem for you?

Look at the countries that are considered to have the happiest, healthiest citizens.  They're places like Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, etc.  All of these places have strong social assistance programmes in effect.

I know where you're coming from, but it just doesn't work.

One thing I've also noticed is that mostly the people who are going to complain about this sort of thing are strongly dependant people.  They think it should all be every man for himself, yet when you take a look at how they live their lives, they're often momma's boys, living at home into their 20's, guys who are totally dependant on their girlfriends or wives, and basically just people who would be dead if they were stuck on their own.

  24. The fundamental question is did we reward them for increasing their numbers? One of the worst mistakes of the great society. Now our prisons are brimming with retarded sociopaths. I'm no Republican but an element of fore site was sadly lacking here, tantamount to exporting a slave population that produces nothing but a demand for food and narcotics and cheap weapons. Doesn't this seem like a reasonable assessment of the situation or am I totally deaf, blind and stupid? Welfare is for the worthy-period,end of story!

  25. Most of the welfare I see are the goverment jobs, DMV,Hospitals, Employment security commission, that are issued to people that are not qualified,

  26. I think it would be good to add more programs that help people find jobs and maybe have a time limit on how long people can be on it. I also think a lot of women keep having kids to get more welfare. Maybe PAYING them to get their tubes tied would prevent this, or paying the father to have a vasectomy. Also making programs where low income families can get free birth control would help people plan families better.

Maybe start putting our tax money where it can really help, like into programs and family planning would help solve the problem from the root: People on welfare often have more kids than they can afford and no skills, job or education to take care of them. How about giving people the tools and skills to work and manage their lives? This would help more than years and years of free handouts!

I am not against my tax money helping people in need but I don't think it should go to lazy people who sit home watching TV and having babies! My thinking is: Anyone in need can get 1 year of welfare, after this point they have to be in an educational program and be looking for a job.
