  1. well, what makes football, baseball, soccer, swimming, ect... a sport? for the same reason... it is a competition to win that is a workout. tell him that and this "then tell my why it's in the OLYMPICS!?!?!?" put him on a horse and have him jump some crossrails and a few small jumps, but first teach him how to do 2- point, so that he can actually feel it in his quads! just because you are sitting down doesn't mean that it is not highly physical!

  2. Its a physical activity that requires skill, and is done competitively, so i would consider it a sport.

  3. Hehe, I get these arguments all the time. Ask him what makes his sport a sport. If it's football, ask him how on earth two teams crashing into each other to get a ball from one side to the other, is considered a sport. But no, it's all about being physical. That there's a large amount of people willing to do the "sport", it's popular, and there's a high enough level to make it challanging.

If you want to show up your cousin, ask him what his definition of a "sport" is, and apply it to show jumping. :) Good luck

  4. Ok well first... it kinda isnt <THE> sport.... the sport is horse riding... and the disapline is show jumping... i think the best way to describe it is to say... baseball is the sport... pitching is the disapline... well thats how i see it anyway... it is a sport... but its part of a wider sport... coz every show jumper is a horse rider first... does this make any sence?? hope it does... but your cousin mustnt have a strong case because if it isnt part of a sport then what is it??? an activity?? well good luck convinceing him... :)

  5. beacuse not just any idiot can hop on a horse and do it, it takes talent luck skill and a bond between horse and rider

  6. any horse back riding discipline is a sport. People believe that riding a horse requires no work at all. Well it does. In order to properly ride your horse you need to be physically fit, it requires lots of leg muscle and stamina from the rider. Also you must work as a team with your horse, and it requires much dedication, determination, and lots of work. Ask yourself this, if golf is a sport, where you hit a ball with a metal stick, how come riding cannot be? If driving a race car is considered a sport, why not riding? Consider these things and compare the circumstances with actually riding a horse.

  7. no!!!

  8. I think it's more of a sport than golfing, or fishing.... but these are sports. A sport is something you do that is enjoyable, has a challenge to it, a goal to achieve and is interesting to more than one person. Physical activity may/may not [how much physicality is there to catching a bass? It's more a mind game..] be a part of the sport.

  9. Not anyone can just jump onto a horse, and start galloping away, jumping every obstacle that comes their way. (teehee, I just realized that what I just said rhymed, I'm a poet and I don't even know it :P Ok, that one was on purpose)

It takes alot of work, not just sitting on a horse and kicking, like everyone thinks. I think it takes alot more skill than alot of sports, if football can be called a sport, than show jumping (and all riding on horses included) can defianetly be called a sport too!

  10. The amount of physical exertion makes it a sport.

    Can he jump 8ft?

Could he stay on animal that doesn't really want to jump 8ft and make it do it?

I agree, ask him what makes it a sport.

Horse riding takes alot more strength than people seem to realise. You have to make your horse move the way you want, and that requires effort. It is a dangerous sport, where the varible of winning is not just based upon your skill, but the varible of a horse, that is too a point, uncontrollable.

It takes a certian skill, and strength, to make a 1,000 pound horse that would rather eat grass that it should really jump 3ft, or gallop around a barrel at top speed. Horses do not "do all the work" because if they had the choice they wouldn't. People have to do the work to make horses move. The horses aren't making them make the perfect turn, or the right gait, its the person helping the horse to get that gait, that turn, by telling them to, and giving the help along the way.

Us horseriders take more c**p than we should on that matter, its not so much the horse, as the human on top of it, doing the work.

  11. All sports are about having fun, doing your best...and winning. These apply to all sports, no matter what they are. You can get hurt showjumping, like you can in soccer or football. And you meet new people jumping, like you do in other sports. There are many sports that don't involve teams, like track and field or gymnastics.
