  1. Give your horse a bath a day or 2 BEFORE the show so that their coat has time to get the oils back and be really shiny. Always put hoof oil on before you go into that ring so that their hooves are shiny. Also, if they get dusty at the show, take a baby wipe and run it over their coat. because its damp it gets of all the dust without making the coat look wet.

  2. If it is hairy, clip it.

Bathe it with a color enhancing shampoo

    Curry curry curry!

Make sure (hunter/jumper) the mane is pulled to an appropriate length.

Feed flax seed cookies (shiny coat!)

Show sheen to make tail manageable and gorgeous

    Paint hooves

Baby powder (or white shoe polish) on white socks to brighten them up.

Baby oil on muzzle and around eyes to give it that soft shine

Use a towel as your last step in grooming to remove any excess dust and give the last little shine.

Make sure your horse's mane and tail are braided (if appropriate for this show)

Make sure your tack is clean.

  3. If your horse has white markings at all, i rub a little bit of vaseline on them and then dust a tiny little bit of baby powder on top to make them really sparkle.

Also make sure you blanket that animal, no sense bathing and making him or her all pretty, just to arrive in the morning at the barn and see Mr.horse standing there with a big manure stain on him!!!! Not Good!

I always polish my horses feet (black polish if they have any black feet or are supposed to have black feet, clear if they have white feet....) I use Absorbine Hoof Polish, it is relatively cheap and applies well.  Do this the night or day before the show, so you arent rushed.  The polish will wear off after a while, so dont worry!

Have fun & enjoy your first show :)

  4. Make sure you your fell and your tack are immaculate.

  5. All tack should be clean, washed saddle pads and sparkling bits. Your horse's mane should be braided, his hooves should be polished. Give him a bath and make him nice and shiny.

You should be looking neat and ready to work - Clean breeches, velvet helmet, with your hair in a net. Polish your boots. Also, before you go in the ring, get a friend to clean the bottom of your boots while mounted. While your heels down, that dirt is visible.

Your horse should be immaculate - make him look like you spent hours brushing him - He is a reflection on you.

If you have an awesome round, look like you've done it a million times. Be confident, not cocky.

Concentrate on your horse, what he is saying, not the crowd or how well you are doing. You can always celebrate later.

Make sure you put your horse first and reward him - Good day, AND bad days.

    Good luck!
