Show Some Magic shows his magic in the Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park
J. Kirk Robison and Judy Robison owned juvenile colt, Show Some Magic, experienced his second career victory when he defeated winners for the first time in the $106,000 Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park in New Mexico on 23 December, 2012.
The only other victory was against maidens at Saratoga Race Course on 16 August, 2012, in a maiden special weight race, and then into stakes and graded stakes company, the colt suffered huge losses, as he was not able to hit the board once in three starts, but a change in jockey was enough to guided Show Some Magic to his first stakes victory.
Miguel Hernandez rode the Any Given Saturday colt after being sent as the 6 to 5 favourite in the field of eight two-year-old colts and geldings.
Over the distance of one mile on a fast track, was pegged back in the beginning, as the duo stalked leaders in between horses. Third on the outside of pacesetter I Stand Alone and Holiday Mischief, Show Some Magic was shaken off to take the lead rounding off the final bend.
Things were looking straightforward in the upper stretch, but the 23 to 1 shot Stormdriver circled rivals thought the second turn, and gamely engaged into a battle with Show Some Magic, but the leader dug in the final furlong, and held off the determined challenge from Stormdriver.
Show Some Magic won by half-length and covered the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 38.19 seconds.
Owners J. Kirk Robison and Judy Robison won the Riley Allison Futurity for the second year running, who bought Show Some Magic for $70,000 out of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale.
"We thought he'd be good from the get-go. Broke his maiden at Saratoga, so you know he's got to be a pretty good horse to do that," Robison said. "We brought him here with the objective of winning the Sunland Derby. He had to work pretty darn hard that last eighth, but he got it done."
Show Some Magic was coming into the Riley Allison Futurity off a subpar performance in the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot at Delta Downs.
