  1. You must have policies in the setting which support anti-discriminatory practise, which will say that all children are treated equally regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion or ability.  Your setting must be all inclusive in that children with special education needs have access to all areas and activities.  Equipment must reflect diversity.  Dressing up clothes should be for boys and girls, have clothing from different cultures and be accessible to all.  Girls should be encouraged to play with traditional 'boys' toys, and boys encouraged to use traditional 'girls' toys.  Toys should reflect all races and sexes such as having black dolls, boy dolls, etc.  Books, toys and posters should show ethnic minorities and disabled people in positive roles such as working as doctors, teachers, policemen/women etc.  and not stereotyped according to race, ability and gender.

  2. If there is a child with behavioural problems, bad parents, disabilities or are multicultural, you must have an understanding and empathy.

  3. Not having preconcieved idea: eg: boys can play with dolls, girls can be builders sort of thing!

Making sure toys are suitable eg: not too easy and not too hard so a wide range of children can access it.

Challenge stereotypes and discriminative words and gestures you hear children use.

Know about their culture and background eg: some children in Muslim society have gender roles in the home and so a boy may not understand what tidy up time is as it may be his mother and sisters role at home. You'll need to balance the rules of the setting and his right to follow his culture.

Safety-eg: is a sari suitable for a climbing frame game?

Looking at the toys and images in books and posters-are they giving out the right vibe? Are all child from an african background pictured wearing trandition clothing or is it showing the african culture in the UK (western clothes like jeans and coats).

Understanding that 1-3yr old s product of their homelife so they need understanding and patience! Oh and you should have basic understanding of the laws regarding equality and diversity eg: childrens act, race relations act, disabilty discrimination act etc.

  4. The concept is completely foreign to me simply because I don't even think about being anti-biased or anti-discriminatory.  I just love and enjoy all the children.

    Matt

  5. I have this one to answer too. I believe that they will be looking for actively challenging discrimination eg. if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. You need to say that all children will be included and valued no matter what ethnicity, gender, ability, culture and beliefs.

That sort of thing. you should be able to get a bit more from a decent text book - they usually refer to anti bias.
