Question:

Show cattle breeds?

What would you say is the best mix for a show steer? I would like to breed my own, since club calves are too expensive.

I know angus, charolais and shorthorn are most popular, but what is the best mix percentage.

  1. In 4-H and FFA I used Angus Heifers as breeding stock, bred to a Hereford bull, to produce a "black baldie" then bred those heifer calves back to a Charolais bull.  In our market area those steers & heifers brought the highest price at sale.  They also look good, they're hardy, and they put on weight well (high feed efficiency).  The only drawback might be pinkeye problems in the Herefords and baldies, but proper fly management will eliminate that issue.
