Show homeschool on a resume?

How would you add your homeschooling years on a resume? I'm helping a friend with his resume and I'm completely bummed on this one. He's done community college but I feel I must list SOMETHING for his earlier education. I just don't know how to go about doing this.

  1. If he used an umbrella school, he should list the name of the umbrella school, years attended, and degree earned. If he did not use an umbrella, then Homeschool, years attended, and degree (even if parent issued). More and more employers are seeing homeschool on resumes, and are quite used to it. They often give preference to them in scheduling interviews because of the reputation of a strong work ethic among homeschoolers.

  2. Be honest! Nowadays it is quite common. My kids were all homeschooled and they  put it on the resume/application.Most people know the value of a homeschol education! We  have never had any problems.

  3. I did homeschool in highschool. I went through an actual school...that is just for homeschoolers.  We ordered my books through them and we had to send them my grades every few weeks and if we had a problem (algebra for example) we could call and talk to a teacher.  On my resume I put the name of the school where we got my books from.  If anything was questioned about it, then I would tell them.  When I graduated the school sent me my diploma and the school's name is on it (my work wanted a copy of my diploma).

    Hope this helps!

  4. The best thing He could do is list it on his resume as Home Schooled. Example:

                           2001 - 2003

                         Home Schooled

                         Curriculum Used

Or however you may set up your resume.

Home School is nothing to be ashamed of. I have worked in a Private Christian School as well as helped some home schoolers. When it came time to get a job or go to college if they did well in their classes (Home school) they were considered before those in a public school.  The reason why is that Home School teaches self discipline and this is what employers are looking for.  Self starters and self discipline people make better employees.  I hope this will help you out. Happy Job searching and may you find what you are looking for.

  5. I would not list it on his resume. I would organize his resume with "skills" and "relevant course work" and "experience".

  6. Why not just put self directed high school education or something?  Why would home schooling be bad

  7. What's wrong with telling people your homeschooled? I did, and I still got the job. I'm not ashamed of it. Your friend shouldn't be either.

  8. We currently home school. Our third child recently had a Kindergarten graduation through our home school group. we just called our school "X" academy. Other parents were more or less creative than us. Some we Broken Spoke School  and "x" christian school. There are many ways to give a name to a home school; but, be creative and honest about it.

Hope this helps!! God bless and good luck!!!

  9. Usually after having had some postsecondary education, it is no longer appropriate to list one's high school on a resume. It is assumed you had to graduate from high school in order to enter community college. Work experience and community service activities are much more important to list.

But if your friend insists on listing his secondary level education, he should not call it homeschooling. The home school should be given a name, such as [his street] Academy. Many employers are put off by the information that a job candidate was homeschooled, since the quality varies hugely. My advice is to keep it off the resume, lest it end up in the round file, but to answer truthfully if they ask about it in the interview.

  10. Homeschools are private schools.  Just name your private school (Smith's Academy or Jone's Learning Institute, etc), and use that name on the resume.
