  1. Take a dump and sniff it

  2. yes you can learn a lot from books, but a problem is tricks can get very complicated and its hard to get a proper idea of the trick from text and one view pictures.

you can buy magic dvds, they should have them at any magic shop. some very good dvds is dan and dave's trilogy, and bill malone's on the loose. bill malone is a bit old school, but a great mix of humor and magic. dan and dave are more new, flashy, a great mix of flourish and magic.

if you dont want to spend money on dvds, you can check youtube. there are a lot of magicians doing tricks on there. a lot even post turtorials.

when deciding what tricks to do, you really have to think of the environment you will be preforming, if your doing a huge auditorum where the front seat of the crowd is more than 10 feet. you cant do close up magic because no one can see anything. in that situation i would do flourishes. very visual and doesnt depend on being close. but i doubt you can get good enough in 3 days. i've been flourishing for 2 years, and im still pretty bad.

  3. watch this tutorial video. Its called the snap change

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yxOB_77q...

Now that you know how to do it, here's some tip

To make it better, you should start with a deck of cards, double lift 2 cards as one, so you can perform that snap change.

A simple way out of many ways to do a double lift is to hold the deck in your left, 1st and 2nd finger grip the top card. lift up the card with your right hand 1st finger, as you lift up the first card, use the remaining flesh of your finger tip to lift up the 2nd card, it is covered by your top card so if done smoothly, people will not notice you lifted up 2 cards. Practice and you will get the hang of it.

Now, when you want to perform the snap change, hold the deck of cards, still in your left hand, just behind the card you are holding up. As you do the change, remember that the first card is now hidden behind?

Release the card into the deck smoothly. and you are clean!!! Clean means your spectator can inspect your card to see that you only holding one card.

Note: if you cannot get the double lift perfected in time, forget about this deck. Just do it without any deck of cards. Just prepare with 2 cards already in hand. Don't forget to secretly square them up as you leave, or people will notice its 2 cards

If you cannot do the double lift correctly, it will ruin the trick as people will know that you lift up 2 cards

Another simple visual card trick is the Erdnase Color Change

    Tutorial video is here

There's nothing much to it. Just practice for smoothness, not speed. If you ask me, I prefer to do it the smooth way, not the fast way where you quickly push the palmed card into view.

The tip here is to make a gesture after the change has actually took place. If you do it the fast way, your gesture is done when the "trick move" is done.

If you do it smoothly, you actually already place the new card in its position, then you do some gesture like turning your hand few times before revealing.

That way, people would thought that your "trick move" is when you turn your hand, which is impossible. So its more amazing.

If people can guess that your trick move is when you move your hand up and down the deck, then its not so amazing anymore.

  4. Check out your local library.  I used to work in one, and they have books that will show you various tricks.  You'll be able to learn more impressive tricks than the cheap tricks that can be explained here.
