  1. One could write an entire thesis on the subject.

Commercial farming lack sufficient modern equipment to make a large impact on their GNP.  The Infrastructure/Transportation is not well maintained and this hinders their products from reaching distant other African and European markets on a timely basis....In other words they are not very competitive.

Subsistence and Peasant farmers are the same, they do not own enough land to compete or really become rich.  Since their holdings are small and do not project a basis for large future returns, banks normally do not extend them any credit.  During droughts or periods of agriculture crop pest invasions they are very vulnerable to losing their entire crop.  They just barely produce enough food to maintain the extended family, if there were surplus they would sell or trade it on market day in the village.
