I built a shower, I did everything right, at least I thought so. However it started to leak and now I must rip it all out and try again, at some effort and expense.
This time I'd like to do it beter. As near as I can tell, the leak was caused by one of two failures:
1) Water got behind the grout around the shower door opening, (quite high up actually) ran down the studs, behind the liner, and caused rotting.
2) The shower rated "water proof" drywall based backer board material that I used practically disolved into mush. Next time I will use cement board
3) The liner was glued to the drain on the bottom edge with silicone glue, I suspect this glue failed, and water leaked out and got caught in the subfloor, again rotting.
So my questions:
1) Any suggestions to make sure the next try is 100% water PROOF
2) What is the best way to glue the water proof flexible membrane to the shower drain so that it can't leak at this conection
