Showing a non QH in AQHA shows?

Ok I am pretty dense when it comes to showing. I did 4H when younger then some drill team, barrel racing but no real shows. Now I just do a few playdays and trail ride. I know someone with what looks to be a mostly TB if not TB/QH and they showed in the AQHA regionals. How is that so? I just assumed to show AQHA you had to have a QH. Just curiousity. Thanks!

  1. That horse may have been appendix bred, TB and QH, you may show those or only full AQHA to show at a AQHA breed show.   How could I forget a paint cropout....two AQHA parents who have a foal with excessive white markings may now show at our AQHA shows.

Body types have no bearing on quarter horse registration as the QH's now are heavily specialized....you'll see Huntseaters riding very thoroughbred looking QH, which are appendix bred (TB/QH) with enough points won the appendix breds can obtain permanent standing P in front of their registration numbers , you'll see smaller looking cowhorses, a little longer muscled, you'll see rope horses both tie down and team roping horses who are heavier muscled to put the stop on a steer.  And our halter horses are built like Mack trucks...almost a freakish amount of muscle.

A hunt seat stallion who also drives..............

Just some examples of the different body types found within the AQHA.

To show at a breed show you must have a horse registered within that particular breed...NO exceptions.

  2. If they showed at a regional AQHA show then they had to have been registered with AQHA.  AQHA also allows Appendix Quarter Horses to be registered.  Its possible that her horse is a TB/QH cross that is recognized as an appendix.  Basically, if one parent has full QH papers and is crossed with a TB, it can be registered as an appendix.  Then, if the appendix (who is 50% TB) earns enough points at AQHA recognized shows, they can gain their full QH registry.  At that point, if they want to breed that horse to a TB, and have a 75% TB baby, they can register that baby as an appendix QH, and show it AQHA as well.

You usually run across this stuff with the english classes.  But what it boils down to is that you CAN have a horse that is mostly TB and show it at AQHA shows if it has appendix papers.

  3. its possible because this horse is somewhat a type of a quarter horse. so that means that he can show as a quarter horse!!!!!!! =D

  4. if it was a TB/QH then it could show as a QH in the AQHA,  but if not, maybe they were competing with the understanding that they couldn't use the points gained/could win/couldn't go to the AQHA worlds..?  i dunno.. weird.

EDIT: Katie a said it better then i did!

  5. QHs can look anywhere from bulldog-type foudation QHs to long, lean TBs.  I've had 'em all my life and seen about everything in between.  One cannot judge a horse's registration or breeding on looks alone.

I personally own a TB mare who passes well for a running QH - in fact she throws some very good appendix conformation for barrel racing.  The horses look lean and TB, but are actually appendix QHs.

A person probably wouldn't waste their time going to AQHA shows if they didn't at least have and Appendix AQHA to gain points on as points are the main goal of a breed show like that which increases the value of the horse.

If that horse has primarily racing bloodlines, which many barrel horses nowadays do, it can be bred back many times over to something that's half TB - and they actually come out over half TB.

My paint mare out of a TB mare and a paint stud looks quite like a heavy TB - here sire is race bred on his top side through The Wheel Horse - which was quite a bit TB, so my mare actually is more than half TB, but she's registed as "paint bred" because she's not painted, she's solid bay.  So were I to show her in APHA shows, someone might ask how I could do that as she's not painted.  Since her daddy was painted, the only registry available to her is Paint registry, not QH or anything else.

    Hope this helps.

  6. The bottom line is that if your horse does NOT have AQHA papers or AQHA Appendix papers then it CAN NOT show at a sanctioned AQHA show.

Having said that, there are bigger open shows that do have AQHA classes in them (Grand National, Cowpalace) does have fence classes for AQHA horses.

IF your horse does NOT have AQHA papers or one type or the other (Appendix papers are yellow, AQHA are white and blue), then you can not show in one of their shows or one of their breed classes.
